did i get screwed? day date questions
Hello All,
So here's my story. I bought a rolex day date super presidential (diamond face, bezel etc...) from a local pawn shop. The watch has a serial number dating back to 1991 (starts with X). Bracelet is presidential and stamped 18k with diamonds down the middle. So some stones had fallen out, upon replacing the stones on the bracelet, my jeweller tested the band and it turned out to be 14k. Rest of the watch did test ok for 18k. The movement in the watch is stamped 3135 how ever it does have dual quickset. I went back to where I bought it and can't get my money back. So my question is, without verifying at Rolex (because it takes a week), would a day date from 1991 have a 3135 movement? I understand that it should come with 3155, and some 3135 were modified to add the dual quickset? So am I looking at just a fake bracelet, or you guys think the whole watch is fake? Please as much feedback TODAY would be greatly appreciated!! |

Most of these so called super presidents are somebody's creation from a plain rolex day date. Aftermarket bands, dials and bezels with stones added and a high appraisal is what I usually run across.

Pics might help in determining what you have there.

It doesn't look good, but wait for the experts to arrive.

No expert here but my best guess of this is a fraken rolex. You may have an original case, movement and bracelet with aftermarket diamonds and the various parts may be from different watches and put together to create a new watch.
Re 14k and 18k, I haven't heard of rolex ever using 14k but may be wrong about them doing it years ago. Certainly all modern rolex are 18k.

To me the term, getting screwed, is relative... If I may, how much was spent for this Unique piece?

i don't want to say the exact amount because i don't want it to influence your judgements, but a legit amount was paid.... Last edited by Tools; 4 June 2014 at 01:35 AM.. |

If any of it the case and movement are legit.
I had a conversation with a Rolex person not long ago on he subject and Rolex only used and uses 18k so the bracelet is not legit and my guess is the stones are not of high quality either. At the end of te day as long as you're happy.

Hate that your first Rolex purchase is a suspect one at best, but maybe you can recoup 2/3rds of your money by reselling it? (with full disclosure of course) and trying again for another... good Luck man

thanks guys, so basically datejust gold (explains the 3135 movement) converted to a day date by bridging 3135 and putting on a 14k president style bracelet..... what would you guys value it at? low to high..

Is it just me or does the placement of things on that dial look all crooked?

You're right

The blue stones on either siday of Thursday are way off. Not the best aftermarket dial I've seen. I'd sell off the movement get what I can for the gold as scrap and whatever I could for the stones and walk away a poorer but wiser person.

Either take the above advice or sue the seller. Then spend a few minutes on this Forum looking at real watches so you can spot a red flag like yours before dropping $9,000 for it... Out of curiosity--if you thought that was a good deal, what did you think the retail for that interesting piece would be?

Not sure how old and/or wise the OP was before, but he's certainly older and wiser now. I doubt he'll make the same mistake again. |

Or maybe he couldn't find that rare piece at any AD--they've been known to keep special stuff in the safe for good customers! |

Is the date wheel correct? It may be the angle but the thickness of the font of the "17" does not look correct. I will let others chime in.

Why not disclose how much you paid so that it can be taken into account when assessing the value of the watch? After reading the first dozen or so comments, I don't think you have to worry about it negatively influencing people's judgement.

I paid about 9000$ for it, and i'm stressing out because the guy only wants to pay back 5K and don't know what the best thing to do is. I know I can sue him, but I don't have time for the headaches, but if it comes to it I will.... I just want to know as is what would it be worth, i know it's aftermarket dial and bracelet....

Um..real gold but the model you have is not made by rolex, i assume no box or papers imo it is worth scrap gold price. Make them take it back. What you can do is buy a real rolex on here from a seller you could have with 9k with box and papers.
