traveling to italy

got a vacation to Capri and amalfi coast area this fall. was warned not to be flashy as there are people ready to rip off/steal from tourists. usually I like wearing my seadweller as my casual travel watch, but honestly get more comments on it than my offshore. do you guys leave your prized watches behind and just rock a gshock or say the hell with it I'll wear what I want. I also have a beat up Breitling that I'm considering using too.

I've travelled to Italy many times and never had a problem. If you use common sense you can wear just about anything you want. Have a great trip .... be sure to check out the Cinque Terre

I wear a 16803 when I travel out of the country. I would hate to lose it but find it goes with any outfit I choose, and would not be that hard to replace if necessary.

With all due respect I've never understood these type of questions. There are plenty of Rolex and luxury watch wearers in Italy. Heck....Italians brought the Daytona back to life in the 1960s. Just use common sense and don't go anywhere you don't feel safe. Just like traveling anywhere back home. Have fun!

Yea im not an idiot when traveling, but when I know of family members and friends who have actually had things stolen when they traveled to that area, it makes me wary. Thanks for the responses everyone.

While I agree with this, petty thieves can spot a local from a tourist a mile away.

If you dress and act like a tourist for sure.

Leave the white sneakers at home and you might have a chance blending in.

Too often I see American tourists stick out like sore thumbs.

My SeaDweller has always been my "travel" watch. (Been to Italy twice) now that I am thinking about it...I wore TT Blue Sub the first time.

I usually try to be more aware of my pockets and wallet before worrying about the watch.
(people walking too close or bumping into you)

Stay on the normal beat and path (tourist areas) and you will be fine.
Stay away from those dark alleys

Enjoy!!

Enjoy your trip!

Naples is the only place in Italy I wouldn't wear my Rolex/Tudor.

Don't worry about it too much, wear what you want but I would go with the sea dweller and leave it in the hotel safe if it's a worry

Wear it and have fun!

I have been many times and I offer some must see/do items below...

Sorrento- Nice town, good shopping, gelato, try the lemon liquor
Capri- Blue Grotto, wear your SD & ask if you can jump in the water real fast, they let us!
Cinque Terre- Beautiful hiking on the coastline to picturesque little towns
Portofino- Great fishing town with awesome restaurants
Pompeii-

Went to Italy for my honeymoon and we travelled around the country to various places such as Milan, Rome, Venice, Florance and both my wife and I wore our matching SS Datejusts. It was never an issue, although I was warned by a friend that there is a good chance tourists can get mugged, especially in parts of Milan around the Centrale Train Station.

In any event, as long as common sense is applied and you don't advertise your Rolex or any expensive items, I think you will be alright. This can be said pretty much about anywhere a person chooses to travel, not just Italy.

Should be safe if in doubt wear something else, just make sure it is in a safe at home while away, hate to see your house broken into, to be fair more likely than your watch being taken off you on holidays. Agree it is your wallet or handbag that is more at risk than something bolted to your wrist.

You will spot a lot more Rolex wearers in that part of the world than most places

👍 Europeans are much more into watches. Teenagers and young adults are sporting many high end pieces!

I'd be more cautious about having credit card details stolen..that happened to me last time I was there.

One of my ex-GFs was from Puzzoli (close to Napoli) so I went there few times. If you are going to stay at Capri and Amalfi, you are going to be fine. These are touristy areas and generally safe. I would stay away from Napoli's downtown (especially after dark), and just use common sense.
Check out Ischia if you would like to swim, one of the nicest little islands there; great beach.

As everyone said, you'll be fine everywhere but Naples. DON'T wear it there if you decide to make a stop.

Have fun.
