I have always considered this specific Rolex Sub Date model to be 100 % exactly on the line between "still stylish" and "way too blingy". It's a beautiful watch, imho. Not a watch for every situation, but still a nice one.

Recently, my better half [my wife, for those that think diamonds/sapphires in a man's watch implies something else] bought me a SS/YG sub with the champagne Serti dial. While it is definitely a bit towards the blingy side, I feel as though it is still tasteful. Now I have a choice, depending on mood, not attire. The only downsides are the lack of illumination for the hour markers, and the fact that I am having difficulty in getting used to the magnified date. Her casual watch is a 29mm SS/platinum YM, and her dressy one is a 26mm SS/WG fluted DJ with the MoP dial, diamond hour markers, and Jubilee bracelet. |

Your wife and I have similar tastes. My casual watch is a 29mm TT YM, and my dressier watch is the same as hers, but TT. I love them both.

I've had the pleasure of seeing one in person on a few different occasions.
It's absolutly beautiful. Much more so than the champagne colored serti.

Here's a serti "older style" GMT with diamond and ruby hour markers in all YG with a jubilee bracelet
Of course the newer GMTs have a serti dial too, but the ones I've seen also had diamonds on the bezel, on the case lugs and sometimes on the bracelet.

Oohhh Dan, I wasn't knocking the champagne dial at all. I think it's nice looking too.

I have owned one in the past and wore it for several years. They are a beautiful sports watch. "Blingy", yes but tastefully so IMHO. I wore mine with jeans and a tee shirt all the time. It also went well with a suit. Very versatile.
When I started collecting watches and had several to wear, my Serti became my dress watch and I even added a gold bezel to really make it such. I ended up only wearing it on a Saturday night or special occasion when going out. Then I acquired the TT Daytona which cut down on the Serti's wrist time even more. After spending some time here on TRF, I really missed my Bluesy seeing all the great pics out there. I decided to find a factory blue dial and swap it to make my Serti into a Bluesy. It was the perfect decision for me as I wear the blue TT Sub by far more. If anyone wants a Sub and a dress watch in one, the Serti editions are a great choice..Ramble over!

Interesting, because I view the serti dial Submariner as a classic example of the changing market and appeal of Rolex in general, from the rugged watch of adventurers of all types to a piece of "man" jewelry whose use and image are a far cry from the original design intention.
Even so, I still think it would look best on a woman. In actuality, I've only seen a couple of men in person wearing a serti sub, and ironically, they looked like the type of men I would think would be attracted to wearing one. |

As to the type of man who would be attracted to wearing one? I take your comment to mean a person of class and taste who is 100% confident in their manhood to care less what anyone thought of a guy wearing a watch with diamonds on it. I agree totally!

Somehow a tool watch with diamonds seems a little anomalous to me IMHO

Great looking watch...will the insurance allow you to buy preowned? Dreamwatches usually have pretty good deals on used Sertis. J Jim would like to use this opportunity to state that he is in no way affiliated with Dreamwatches. He is just cheap and wants his forum buddies to get a good deal. |

While I am not a fan of the diamond hour markers I think the serti dial looks very nice indeed on the watch.

Cut: The cut varies with each stone though I tend to see baguette cut, princess cut, and round cut stones as the most common in any watch. Color: Rolex diamonds are D color, which are virtually "colorless." No yellow tint at all. Clarity: The clarity I believe are VS1-VS2. Very slight inclusions, though they cannot be seen with the naked eye at all. The only levels above VS are VVS or IF or "internally flawless" and those diamonds can sell for about $30,000 a carat! A 2 carat solitaire IF ring is easily $70,000 or so. Carat Weight: Like the cut, this also varies with each diamond. Baguette cuts have more carat weight then round cuts, etc.

It's funny.
I am also looking at the possible steel serti dial Sub as an insurance replacment from a robbery, either that or a plain bluesy. I agree diamonds a mans watch can be a challenge. This is done so well and works so great, IMO. The dial is fantastic in person! I feel that the diamonds are not overpowering in ANY way, another reason I like it is because is is just a little bit different than the bluesy that is so popular, albeit for good reason, it's AMAZING! |

Ok, what does SERTI stand for or mean? Heard it, saw them, OK but, where did this term originate?
Anyone?
