Jaguar 420g
I'm considering looking to purchase a cared for Jaguar 420G. Are these cars money pits? I'm willing to pay for some restoration - but I'd like to know how well they hold up. A review of sorts from anyone who owns one.

I think it is more a labour of love. You will spend more to restore than you will get back I suspect, however it may give you satisfaction about saving a classic Jag and they may be worth more than any depreciation. They are a lovely model with a genuine high end Jag motor the mighty 4.2L. Ultimately the only old cars where restoration will get your money back is old 911's and ferrari's and even then you need to do a great job with deep pockets to get your money back. A different style of car but a safer bet may be an old Austin Healey these are going up well in value. I know where your coming from though, my heart would love an old daimler double six but my heart tells me no.

I'm after a weekender ride. I'd probably never care to ever sell it. I just don't want to throw money away constantly.

A classic car is a never ending story . . .
The best you can buy is a Porsche 911, 912 or 914 Italian . . . electric / engine problems English . . . just the same Now the 420G is not the most sought car of the Jags If it needs to be a Jag you better go for an E type or a mk II 3.8 . . . . that's an investment I saw a beautiful E-type Convertible 2 weeks ago for 25 k in really great shape . . . but I just got the 911 and some others this year . . . otherwise Mrs might divorce me . . . But my next one will be a Spaghetti Rocket ;) A 3X8 (308 / 328) or Mondial Convertible . . . preferably the 3X8 for the moment That's was always and still is my dream . . . and dreams are there to become reality . . . I guess If you need help . . . .just send a PM Good luck in the hunt |

Might take a peek over at Jaglovers forum, been a great resource to me. Picked up a 300x 16 months ago, I was looking for something to play with, it had been parked for ten years and was almost free. It has been a blast!

Driven a lot of old Jags but never one of these! I also like the old V12 pilarless Coupe's which are of a similar design.

These are a great looking and very individual big luxury sedan.
A mate's dad had one about 40 years ago and we young bucks would cruise around in it on the weekend. Not much performance due to the weight, but a great cruiser with tremendous 'road presence', although of course a "gas guzzler". Lovely old English interior with all that leather and polished wood. As long as you know exactly how much rust you are buying and are prepared to do most of the work yourself they are a quite unique model. Are they a 'money pit' - of course they are - but so are all old cars. I absolutely love old Jags but will never buy one as I wouldn't be prepared to put the time (and money) into one that it would demand.
