VIDEO: Bracelet "Stretch" Repair
DISCLAIMER: I am in no way associated with the company in the video and am not posting this for advertising or promotional purposes.
I'm not sure if this video has been posted before, but I stumbled upon it while watching random Rolex related videos on YouTube. While I'm unfamiliar with Gray and Sons, they posted a very interesting inside look on their Rolex bracelet repair services. This repair service is similar to what the highly regarded Michael Young offers, though it doesn't look like Gray and Sons replaces the lost gold. I have not used the bracelet repair services from G&S or MY, and this is not a comparison post. It's cool to see another independent watchmaker's approach at fixing bracelet "stretch," though this labor intensive project that took "a few weeks" (according to the video's narration) doesn't seem very time effective! Have a look for yourself and share your thoughts! |

I've seen a bunch of videos from Gray & Sons. It looks like they do great work. Somewhat off topic, but watch their video on an AP RO Tourbillon restoration. It's pretty awesome.

I have seen this video before and it reminds me that the wife's 1992 Lady President bracelet is going to need this precise rebuild. I imagine a new 18k bracelet will probably be north of 10G's, so this looks like a much less expensive alternate.
For those in the classical music crowd, the beautiful background music is Czech composer Bedrich Smetana's Ma Vlast (the La Moldau movement) - translation My Homeland, the Moldau obviously being a river identified by the flowing motion played by the strings. Very appropriate for the work at hand - i.e. lots of liquids used. J. Alan |

can someone clear something up for me.... (apologies if I'm being incredible simple.....)
my impression was that the pins within the links eventually wear away the link itself, and hence the pin has more movement within its hole hence the stretch. Surely they have to "refill" the hole in order to remove stretch? or am i totally missing the point here? |

Fantastic results...... Now for a idiotic Rolex policy fact: I dont believe Rolex will service that watch because it has been altered outside their angelic service department.

He should clean his sink if he's going to put it on video...

Their policy is to exchange bracelets, they do not rebuild them. They will give a discount for an exchange but the discounted price is still very high, that's why most elect to have their bracelets rebuilt. I haven't heard of a rebuilt bracelet being rejected for service but that wouldn't surprise me, nothing Rolex does surprises me...

I wonder what Gray and Sons charges for that service vs Michael Young? I have had my TT jubilee band repaired by MY but not sure I would have the same piece of mind with shipping my Presidential band to Hong Kong even if it's insured.

I was just quoted 5800.00 for a full restoration or 2500.00 min for a partial restoration. Michael would probably be your most cost effective route

I know this is an old thread, but does it bother anyone else that they don't perform the same "stretch test" after the bracelet is restored to show the difference? They point out the stretch in the beginning, but don't show it rectified. Oh well.
