I feel the need to vent...

There is a classic car restoration shop within several miles from my home that often has some pretty exotic cars parked outside within feet of the road. Today, I saw a beautiful Rolls Royce outside from the 1930s and wanted to take a picture of the grille with my Rolex Day-Date to show fellow TRFs. To make a long story short, while I was taking the picture from the sidewalk, the owner came running out and began yelling at me. I tried to explain why I was taking a picture, but he told me to give him my phone to erase the picture. I told him I was a simple doctor that wanted to take a special picture. He went on and on about how the picture will probably end up on an auto internet site, and he still wanted my phone. Since I was on a public sidewalk, I told him to go f*** himself! and walked away.
I don't know if it was his demeanor or my reaction to being yelled at after spending years of sacrifice to gain the respect I feel I have earned. (Or maybe I was mad, because I felt like punching him in the mouth.) Was I over-reacting?

Seems like the guy is a jerk. If he doesn't expect some attention from a vintage RR, then he probably shouldn't be driving/owning it.

Well, in my view, unless you exhibit your credentials at all times, you are only entitled to the respect one should receive by the simple virtue of being human.

Besides that, if you were in a public venue, then the nut case who accosted you for taking a picture is way out of line and you were perfectly justified in telling him what you did.

By the way, are there really any "simple doctors?"

I believe that my appearance and the manner of speech I utilize in normal conversation would elude to my education and breeding. After all, I did not have on pants with my underwear showing or flashed any gang signs. I was wearing a $1500 blue blazer, an 18kt watch, and a two-carat wedding band, driving a 911.

I am not trying to show off as some of you suggest, I was trying to paint a picture

Since you are an intelligent human being, you should have asked for the owners permission and this would have avoided any conflict.

How would you like it if someone was taking a photo of your wrist just to show others on a watch forum? Or taking a picture of your house etc? We need to respect people's property and wishes.

If the car was in a car show, then I would expect all would be ok with taking a photo. Since it was a private property, I feel that the owner is justified by asking you not to take a photo.

I totally agree. I've been a photographer and journalist for decades, and with the exception of public servants/law enforcement/etc. who may be engaging in lawless behavior it is basic decency and respect to ask permission before shooting a picture.

A picture that you are entitled to do something others should not simply because you spent some money on luxury items?

Simply stating "I was not dressed like a thug", would have conveyed the message.

Regardless, material possessions have no bearing on the situation. In his eyes, you are still a wannabe getting dangerously close to something he treasures. Your watch and ring could be fakes for all he knows.

That being said... having had a vehicle at one time that was often the target of other's fascination, I know how he feels. I never said anything for the reasons mentioned (in a public place, etc)..

I am glad that neither of you decided to escalate the encounter.

Funny thing is, you won't find rappers who dress and behave like this taking pics of a Rolls.....They ACTUALLY OWN one ........ Apparently their "breeding" is at least one expensive car better than yours...

Apparently all of that education and high breeding didn't teach you how to spell the word allude.

And for the record, I also agree with Adam.

We all know it is not illegal to take photos of someones plates or car. However, What you do with that picture should be considered. I would blur out the plates if you did share it on an internet forum, Regardless if it is auto or watch related. Seems the owner was not incorrect in his assumption. Telling someone to go F his self is probably the 1st indication that someone is not educated. And deserves zero respect from that moment. So I am certain the car owner felt justified in his attempt. I would have deleted the photo and apologize. Explained myself after it was deleted. Hope this was a learning experience for all. Including me. I don't think I will take any pics of RR from a sidewalk.

I have resolved my issue with the gentleman at the restoration shop. I ran into him last night at, of all places, my daughter's field hockey game (they actually know each other.)
I walked over to him and he began apologizing even before I said a word. He asked his daughter if he knew me, and apparently she told her father that he helps with their drills, and he has big icky leg muscles. The owner then told me that a rival shop sent several people to his shop, one evidently, to have work done on an old Jaguar, only to use pictures from his shop to show customers restoration work and paint work they allegedly did themselves.
I told the owner I was just taking a picture of my watch pointing toward the grille for my watch friends, "two classic beauties."
I told him that I felt embarrassed and felt like a scolded child. He smiled and said he probably would not have kept his cool as well as I managed. I said that I guess he didn't hear me tell him to "go f*** himself! he laughed again and said "no,"he was too upset about the pictures.
We both laughed and laughed, now I have an open invitation to tour his shop, and I invited him out to dinner on Saturday night.

Finally, I made a mistake typing elude instead of allude, get over it! It was a poor attempt to escalate the contempt you feel for me. I forgive you. Please forgive me for being human.
We speak of expensive watches, cars, and jewelry in many of our posts and I can see how many members thought that I was using these items, or my degree, to think I was better than the owner; my thinking was that he should have not treated "an obvious professional man" as an adult may speak to a child ( that is where my anger came from). THE END

This sounds the best as both WAY over reacted.

Neither of you were clearly right or wrong calmer heads should have prevailed instead of escalating a situation I try to intelligently diffuse it, that's what the MD and third degree black belt in me was trained to do

Also since I have a CCP those classes are pretty big on de-escalation, for obvious reasons

End of day no harm no foul, and as we always say "pic or it didn't happen!!"

Time to move on my friend
