Just genuinely wondering why scratches bother us so much. Dings and major damage I understand but even I am mystified as to why scratches on the bracelet and case bother me so much. I read all the posts about the polished centre links scratching easily and how much even small scratches bother people. I took my SD to have the bracelet adjusted to RSC in London and it came back with tiny, tiny damage to the screw heads on both screws on the links and some small scratches on the side of the clasp where the watchmaker had clearly used the 'pin' tool to push in the microadjustment pins and had missed the holes.

And on my Exp II I have some pretty good scratches on the case and the same as what happened to my SD happened with my Exp II when I had the bracelet adjusted - damage to the screws on scratches on the side of the clasp.

And it really bothers me. And I don't know why! It seems scratches are inevitable - and cannot be avoided when making adjustments. The steel is obviously very prone to scratching hence all the stickers the watch has when new. No other watch make seems to have quite so many.

So why do scratches bother the majority as much as they seem to. Is it related to the value of the watch - is our OCD about the things we own related to how much we pay for them?

Shouldn't scratches and marks be a sign of a well loved and well worn piece? Os it the fact that these were put on my watch by someone else rather than me?

Do I need to go and lie down? Don't I have better things to worry about? Gahd help!

If you are bothered by scratches so much, as I would be, why are "dings and major damage" ok? That would drive me insane.

Hey

I don't mean ok as in don't matter I mean ok I can understand being upset by dings and damage. But scratches - hmmm, even I worry about myself sometimes...

This is one thing I like about buying pre-owned...the scratches are there..just as they would be anyway, but I save a few pesos, and don't have to feel responsible for violating the sanctity of a perfect unblemished piece...

I think it really has to do with how perfect it is from the box...and the emotion it generates as we see it at the dealer.
because really, we aren't buying watches, we're buying emotions...otherwise we'd all be wearing a timex...and this forum wouldn't exist.

As the op and others have said, it's that someone ELSE is putting on those scratches and marks that is annoying.

When you go to make the purchase, the AD is so gentle when taking the watch(es) out of the showcase and placing them gently on the green, felt covered mat.

But AFTER you've paid for the watch, that same AD is being so "reckless" with your property and placing his own graffiti marks on OUR watches.

oh well, I'll just continue to wear my watch with bubble wrap.

Personally I just like to keep my possessions in good shape. I am the same about my car, my bike, my golf clubs, ski's, etc..

While I know they will all get use marks over time, but I still like to keep them looking as good as possible. I guess it is just an obsession!! LOL

i like to keep my new things looking new as much as the next guy does. however i also know it's only a matter of time before something happens whether it's a scuff from walking too close to a door or just normal wear and tear. i actually can't wait for the signs to start showing up on my watches so i can stop thinking about it happening.

Yeah, I wish there was a way to keep them looking like the day we got them. The watches I wear regularly show the signs, not much you can do except enjoy one of the best timepieces out there 24 hr. a day.

I am a fully paid up memeber of the OCD brigade, I have a hard time wearing something that is not in tip top shape, may explain all my shortocomings in life as well though

I'm one of the lucky few that can take my watch to get "touched up" at any time. But I do see your point. I've learned to be more aware of my surroundings though. I whacked my bezel on my Breitlng a little bit ago.......put a good dent in it too! It bothered me for a while but I soon realized it's just a watch and sh!t will happen! It will be fixed when I do send it for servicing and life goes on. Just enjoy it........now if you knock it off the bathroom sink on the tile floor...................

Rolex watches are built to last, and as much as they are a status symbol, they are also tough and able to withstand all the elements out there. For those Rolex owners who can't totally enjoy their Rolex because of some psychological infirmity like OCD....well, that's very sad.

totally agree with all the comments, ocd about watches is out there and its not just an X FILE..... my solution for this obsession is to go and buy another rolex to love and cherish.... my girfriend says i care more about my watches then her..... she needs to learn...

Tell me what area you are from and I will recommend a good therapist. It sounds like a Freudian Analyst would be right up your alley where you can lie on a couch and go back to the beginning. May be even some past life work may be appropriate if you cannot find what has made you this way in your present life.

It will cost you lot's of money but it will be less money spent on a piece of metal that sits on your wrist. You may even be paying for his/her kid's college degrees so you will be preserving future mankind. Life is all one big circle anyway.

Scratches bug me too. Face it, we're obsessive compulsive disordered people.
