Why is submariner kept best value?

Hello guys,

The Datejust is the best selling Rolex. When people think of Iconic Rolex, 80% prob will think of Datejust.

A 1980 Datejust can be found $1200+
A 1980 Submariner is average around $5000

What makes Submariner kept better value? I think both models are equally popular and both has lots volume on the market. OR should I say most of Rolex kept good value except Datejust? Then think of some vintage Cellini, AK, ExploreI & II, they are only doing alright. Day-Date kept its value mostly by nature of its material. Nothing really like Submariner. Pepsi & Coke GMT are close to sub but not stronger.

Because.....

Sports models were less popular then and more popular now + the world population and sports model fanbase has increased = Demand now for vintage sports models exceeds the supply = High prices for vintage sports models.

Datejusts have always been a big seller all over the world with tons of different variations and there's buttloads of them out there, from vintage all the way through to new = Supply that exceeds demand = Reasonable prices for used & vintage Datejusts.

Excelent explanations. I would comment that datejust probably less value compare to sub because of so many dial variations and sub just happen to have 1 colour dial only at a time, but you explained it way better

I think we're also seeing a shift in tastes. People are less likely to wear dress watches and more likely to wear "sports" watches, even with suit and tie. Walk into a current AD, and the sports models, particularly stainless steel, are on tighter allotment and not discounted as much as other models.

I really don't see to many DJs at $1200 (as in never seen one at that price). Usually they start at least twice that. Also I see Subs (not Sub Dates) starting at about $4K (really good price) and $5K being a bit higher up the price chain. I'd love to see DJs at $1200. How about pointing to some examples. On the other hand I do think that Subs trade higher than DJs so that premise is correct.

In addition to our society being more casually dressed than the past, my thought is that the 36mm DJ simply suffers from the variety of material/dial/bezel/bracelet choices available, not to mention the bigger DJII. Say you have a domed with silver Arabic on Jubilee. You need to find the buyer that wants that particular configuration above all the others available to choose from. So the price gets lowered in order to move it. It is much easier to find a buyer that wants the black dial/black bezel Sub you're selling.

As Henry Ford said about the Model T - "You can have any color you want as long as it's black."

OP quoted a 1980 Sub. A 1980 Sub (5513) usually costs quite a bit more than a 1990s 14060.

So does the GMT and Daytona. But can you find a SS DJ for $1200?

In addition to the reasons already mentioned, 36 mm watches just aren't in as much demand, because tastes have changed and maybe because people are bigger. Now there is a DJII on offer, which surely cuts into the vintage DJ market for people more drawn to a bigger sized dressier watch.

No one wanted Daytonas at that time but they are more valuable than both the sub and datejust added together

Used product are based on the market, hence we have "market value"

People are willing to spend 5 thousand on a used Sub as the Sub is highly collectable and there is considerable demand.

The DJ is an excellent watch and is an excellent value. There are more of them available at many price points, but it is not high on the collectors list and so not as many folks are willing to pay as much as the Sub commands.

That's just the way it is.. Lot's of Ford Falcons out there too, but people will pay a lot more for a Mustang..

For me, probably because of the "James Bond" connection, I always thought of a Sub when I thought of a Rolex long before I even really knew anything about the Rolex.

To me the Sub Rolex was a rugged, albeit expensive tool watch. It was an action watch. Anything else in the line, to me at the time was a woman's Rolex.

if you were a man of adventure, or the "most interesting man in the world".....you wore a Sub.
