First Purchase

I plan on making my first Rolex and/or luxury watch purchase soon. I have a budget of about 8-10k and need the TRF brain trust for some input.

I've been reading and viewing a lot of beautiful watches over the past year or so, but can't really decide where to start.

My question is: Do I take said budget and get ONE watch, or attempt to purchase TWO different watches? One definitely needs to be a Rolex, but the other doesn't necessarily have to be.

With that budget, I'd go for the one - you'll have more to choose from.

Hmm what are you in to? what other watches do you have? do you like sport watches or dress watches?

No way for 2, go for 1, after it depends on your tastes but for that budget I would definitely go sub, with or without date, if it's your first and only Rolex I wouldn't get the sub LV, or the Sea Dweller is a great watch, the GMT is nice also but prefer the divers, they are for me THE pure Rolex sport watch

iim trying to get back in as well... if you think u can afford anotherone in the next 1-2 yrs then get one..

in my opinion.. if i could have a 8-10k budget.. id get a 2 tone gmt/sub and a date/no date stainless sub (both older obviously).. having bought new once i can safely say id never do it again.. and one wont be enough.. im a sub/gmt guy if u like dj's etc you can substitute watches as needed.. 10k coud fetch u a ceramic gmt and a DJ, air king, or something else if you shop carefully..

just my 2 cents.. id only go 10k into 1 watch if it was 15+k into a used all gold lol but thats just me

I doubt a little that 8-10K will get you a 2 tone plus a SS sub, really don't think that's realistic but hey just my 2 cents

im in the market for a tt and im finding plenty at 4.75-6k.. and i have been offered a couple of stainless for 4-4.5k.. seems more than possible to me? even if buying off trf alone

no matter what with that budget u cant lose.. but remember to not over pay.. there are many nice watches out there used and these are built to last a lifetime

Decide what you really like. If you can only get one you will be happy every time you look at, get it. If you can get two that don't excite you, you will wish you would have gotten that special one. On your budget two may be a stretch too... Best of Luck Hunting and please post the winner!

Try to figure out where you want to start with your collection. If you are already talking about possibly buying 2 at one time, then you will end up with more than 1 watch. You have a decent budget, but perhaps with buying pre-owned, you might be able to save a bit & then put that money in a "watch fund" of sorts. Build that up, buy #2. :-) If you want new, you will most likely use up your entire budget on that. 1st figure out where you want to start, sports model? Datejust type?

Which Rolex do you like? I would go for 2, a SS GMT or a Sub and a SS or 2T 36mm DJ jubilee. With 8-10k is absolutely doable, and then you have all bases covered with both a sporty watch and a dressier watch. Anyway, it's your call, post pictures!

now that you have your budget, there is no secret formula. if you want two, get two. if you find you want one, get that one. or maybe three? four? anything beyond a timex is a luxury, after all.

for example, with your budget, you could pick up a tudor black bay (red or blue), an omega speedmaster (with hesalite) and a nomos and have a fantastic set of new watches. or, if the new seadweller makes you the most happy, get that one watch and be happy. or, a new BLNR and a used speedmaster? or, a submariner and save the rest of your budget for something else?

Just because you have a budget for 10K does not mean you have to spend all of it. Would be a lot to be said for buying a nice sub or GMT from a trusted seller and put the rest back in the bank for a rainy day.

I'd focus on one. If there's left over cash after that, you can start thinking about what you may want next.

Focus on just one for now. Be sure to try on quite a few. A Sub is always a great one to start with.

So many choices. I comes down to what you "need" the watch for. For sanewbie I could see either 2 preowned or a current sport model. As for current pieces, as you know there are a huge selection and options about them, a bit bit bigger and masculine, look at the tool watches, everybody loves a sub, GMT has great usability for some, Mil flies under the radar, etc...Then There's the option to acquire 2 preloved ones, maybe an explorer 1 in 36mm or an AirKing and a classic tool watch. But don't forget, if you go that route and the watches are over 5 years old, you should reserve $600 for service per piece ( as a ball park figure).
Anyways, great budget that gets you started on the right foot

With the budget that you have, personally, I would go for 1 piece. However, if I was going to try to get two I agree with the suggestion above.
A nice Sub ND and a Black Bay from the TRF trusted sellers might not be out of the question.

Most of you asked what I liked.
I really dig the Sub and it seems to be the standard as a first Rolex. The BLNR caught my eye the first time I saw it. In addition, I also like the DJ II.
So many choices... I'll let y'all know what the outcome is.

I'm in about the same spot as you, Jaugust (which is probably a first initial and middle name, but I prefer to imagine is the magical moment when the watch hits 12:00 midnight between July and August)

I've settled on getting a TT sub (although I could be persuaded by the right GMT), and then saving up (for a long time) for a DD2.

The way I see it, if I want to wind up with two watches, I want my first rolex to be the more modest.
