After having a good experience recently with the Dallas RSC on my 16800, I decided to send my wife's 6917 to them for service - it's been losing about 5 minutes every day. I was contacted by a nice woman after it was received and examined, who provided me an estimate. I was shocked...

First, I was informed that it's actually a 6916. Instead of the smooth bezel that is on that model, my wife's watch has a fluted bezel, and they will not service the watch unless I have them replace the bezel with the correct one. That part is approximately $900.

Then, I was told that some of the bracelet parts are not genuine Rolex. If they were authorized to proceed with repair, they must remove the bracelet. If I choose not to purchase another bracelet, they will not reattach the bracelet following service. The charge for the new bracelet is $3085.

The total charge for the repair including the new bezel is $2040, for a grand total of $5125.

The street value of this watch, according to my research, is about $1500. I could think of no sound economic reason to allow them to proceed with the work, so it's being returned to me.

Any thoughts?

That's their policy. Easy enough to get it serviced elsewhere for less.

Nothing shocking about it. They have policies. Simple enough to have an independent handle the work.

Ouch.. perhaps try Rikki down at www.timecareinc.com ? Folks here are constantly reccomending him. Yup, the watch has to be 100% genuine before RSC will touch it.

The fact that there is no factory warranty on the piece suggests getting a local repair guy to do the service. No reason to dump more money than what it's worth in this case.

That's their job. They point out the disparities and provide you with a quote. Easy peasy, now you decide what to do with the information.

I have a 90's Rolex Turn-O-Graph that my wife bought me a long time ago. I haven't worn it in years but recently took it out of the watchcase and started to wear it only to find out that it has stopped working. I am thinking the oil has dried up.

I was thinking about taking the watch to RSC in Beverly Hills since I live in Los Angeles. Is there any reason why I should not? Are there independent and superb watchmakers that I should go with instead? TIA!

Give Rik Dietel at Time Care Inc. a call and discuss your watch with him. Over 30 years experience and has a Rolex parts account. He is independent and superb IMHO

Hi, Cronus4 - my wife inherited the watch from my mother about 10 years ago. I had no idea that the bracelet had less-than-genuine parts - it looked excellent to me (but what do I know?).

Not much you can do about that, I echo everyone else's comments on taking it to an independent Rolex certified watchmaker. Hope you get it sorted out.

My mother bought it sometime in the 'eighties from a pre-owned Rolex dealer in Austin, Texas. She gave it to my wife several years ago. I'm going to send it either to Rik or ABC Watchwerks, like everyone recommends - should have done that in the first place.

Sorry to read about this.Having said that,that is why I will never do business with a grey again.I know you mentioned nothing about how you received/bought the watch,but if it was from an AR this would be a non issue.I have bought BNIB from an AR and then decided I was tired of it only to trade down and have regrets about doing it every day.I will purchase again(hopefully within this month)and it will be from an AR and with total peace of mind.I wish you the best.

Ouch! Time to move on to someone else for certain. I did something similar with my Mark II Omega when their quote was more than the watch was worth. MY is doing the restoration for me. Had good luck with Rikki as well.

Well this gives Rolex RSCs a bad name, a bad street presence, and makes for unhappy customers. Not in the policy, but the manner in which the message is delivered.

Yes the watch left the secure Rolex network and as such it got aftermarket parts and we know where the story goes from there.

Why not train the RSC Customer Service Reps in basic politeness and script out something like 'we only use genuine parts and since yours has been modified with non-Rolex parts it may not make sense to you to pay the full return to originality. We find there are times like this where we suggest you consider service elsewhere.' or the sort.

Umm...why should they? and we don't know exactly how the message was delivered. If I was Rolex, I will in no way recommend the customer to leave the watch in its franken condition and have it service elsewhere.

Update: I received the watch back from RSC Dallas on Saturday, and today (Monday) I UPS'd it to Rik in Florida with a full explanation of the RSC position. Stay tuned...

Never monkey around with aftermarket parts! Personally I think it's good that RSC enforces parts and model feature integrity. But, I'm sorry for your situation. Once you get into bed with aftermarket parts, you give up RSC, and I can't blame them for that. So, just go to a good independent.

TomChicago, I totally agree with you. However, and for the record, this watch came into our possession after my wife inherited it from my mother. Being completely unfamiliar with this model, I assumed it was pure Rolex. It was not, but (again) I'm not going to put $5000+ into a watch with a street value of less than a third of that amount. Am I wrong?
