2014 Daytona
I am considering purchasing a new SS Daytona can you guys give any information on when the last updates were made to this model and if I need to look for anything specific to ensure I get a current model , I realise its unlikely that i would find an old version given their desirability,
One question is do the Daytona's feature the solid oyster bracelet like the Submariner C ? I am guilty of rarely wearing my other watches to avoid wear and scratches as a result they come out on birthdays and holidays but if I purchase I must wear it every day to justify the purchase and am conscious about early bracelets going slinky like the Jubilee bracelets. Have these watches been given the Syloxi hairspring? Which i understand to be lower maintenance and have a longer reserve? Is there anyway to confirm the year on these since the random serial numbers became apparent Any thoughts would be appreciated Alan |

All random serials would have the solid solid centre link oyster bracelet (like the Sub C) as well as the Parachrom Hairspring. The bracelet is slightly different than the sub C as it does not have the glide lock adjustment but the Daytona does have the easy link extension which I believe adds an extra 5mm. I am unaware of how to confirm year on Random serial numbers other than G was the last of the non random so anything random was manufactured after G serial was introduced although I for some reason believe there was some overlap, I may be incorrect about that though. Further to this some watches at authorized dealers may have been sitting for a while, but in the case of the SS Daytona I highly doubt this to be a factor.

Daytona
Thanks for the reply,
Just one question do the Daytona's wear comfortably regarding the stop start buttons rubbling on the back of the hand? I tried a replica and it was a bit rough on the back of the hand but it wasn't the real thing |

The Daytona in my opinion is one of the most comfortable rolexes due to its lower profile (lower mm height that it sits from case back to crystal) off of the wrist.
I have never had the pushers run into my wrist or hand. If I had to pick one rolex for daily wear it would be the Daytona due to the comfort level and the fact that it fits under cuffs, sleeves etc very easily. I find my sea dweller, sub and GMT to be rather uncomfortable over the long haul and quite top heavy compared to the Daytona as well. I hope this helps and good luck in your decision.... Also the chronograph feature on the Daytona is excellent to have....I use it to time everything from bbq steaks, drive times and even long exposure photography shots. Kind of a bonus to have the feature readily available as needed. |

I have a black dial and a chocolate dial one. Rolex has so few white dial daytonas on their sports line that it seems that white is the most sought after, at least it once was. If it was me no question I would go with the white dial.
However you have to try both on and go with what really songs to you as the black dial is extremely sharp. White dials wear a little larger (they give a larger appearance) and the Daytona is a smaller rolex so this can be a plus. Ultimately both are beautiful and if it's the only one in your collection either dial is a great choice. Once again please try it on. One will speak to you more than the other and that's what you should go with. I personally don't find one to be more formal than the other, you can wear anything with a rolex imho Attached is a picture of me wearing a hoodie and a solid gold Daytona black dial with diamonds, I honestly believe the Daytona can be worn with anything |

I think the current Daytona model started production with the M/V series (2007-2008). Upgrades included:
- Rehaut ring - Upgraded clasp Prior to this, the Daytona had an "older" clasp, no rehaut, but everything else was the same... the exception being the non blue parachrom balance - though it uses an identical technology. W.r.t comfort, the Daytona is significantly more comfortable than my Sub C. I wear my Daytona daily and absolutely love it. |

The hands on the older model sub dials at 3 and 9 o'clock were on the same plane as the hour, minute and second hands. New ones are higher up on the dial. Older models also had black rings around the sub dials.

. No, the SubC has a solid link bracelet and billet clasp like the Daytona introduced back in 2000. . Rolex does not use a Syloxi hairspring. The Daytona has the Parachrom hairspring and introduced it to the Rolex line back in 2000. The hairspring has nothing to do with the power reserve. . Random serials were introduced in late 2010. There is no difference in a random serial Daytona made in late 2010 and one made yesterday. . Over the past 14 years some minor cosmetics have been seen. These are personal decisions and nothing must-have.

Among the random serial 116520, there are only minor cosmetic differences:
- single tick vs double tick dials - spacing of COSMOGR APH vs COSMOGRAPH - # of permanent links vs removable links, with the newer ones having 3 perm-links on each end vs 4 Browse through FS section to get an idea of these changes. All minor but if you want the NEWEST 116520, it would be single tick, COSMOGR APH, 3 perm-links. There are also slight machining differences such as parallelism of internal lug holes that result in how the end links sit, but these are extreme OCD examples. The newest production have end links that do not seat perfectly horizontal against the case. |

I have a white stainless daytona that is a G series; it has green lume on the hands and hour markers. My random serial Black stainless Daytona has the updated blue lume plots. So at some point Rolex "updated" to blue luminescence

Thanks for the input Guys excellent feed back,
I now have one on hold thanks to your support, just curious does anyone out there think we could see a new ceramic bezel model at Basel next year or will it spoil the legend? |

They have introduced two models that have it, both are precious metals....not sure they would jump in with an all steel ceramic bezel model quite just yet. Just my two cents. Anyway the current steel model Is an amazing watch and perfect in every way. Which dial color did you decide on? |

Sturgeon I read all the comments with interest, I have a Black dial on hold but there could be an option on white, I have never really considered the Daytona due to its availability, it all started with a TT date just in the late 90's then, A TT Sub with a Slate dial in 2010 and I was considering a SS Sub C and have stumbled across an option of a SS Daytona and the exclusivity plays a part, I favour the Black but will take your advice and look at both, when you say the black is sharp do you mean it comes over a bit glossy? thanks for your help Alan

Alan, I wouldn't let exclusivity factor into your decision. It only increases the chances that you'll regret your decision. I would try it on to make sure you truly like the way it looks and feels. I absolutely love my Daytona and got it because I always wanted one, but others can and do disagree.

As for a ceramic daytona, I'd say we are at least 3 years away. My guess is white gold and yellow gold ceramic daytonas with full solid gold bracelets will hit in 2015, two tones in 2016, then stainless ceramic in 2017
