Vintage Rolex 18k 3055 chronograph value redial & aftermarket crown

Hi, I am new here, I have been lurking for years though. I have a chance to purchase my 3rd rolex & I need your guys help very much in valuing this time peice. It is a rolex 3055 18k antimagnetic chronograph with a VALJOUX 69 rolex movement with an 838, XXX serial number. The woman selling it says it was her husbands watch. He had in issue with water getting in the watch at one time so it was gone through by a qualified watchmaker & the dial was redone at the time. Also the winding crown may be aftermarket, I am unsure if it is original to the watch, it does not have the rolex logo on it.

I need you guys expertise on this watch & its value being it had a redial done on it at one point, it looks like a very good redial to me. She is asking $7,000 is that a fair price, it would seem so to me. I know they go as high as $20,000 but being it has a couple issues such as a redial I am unsure how to value it. I have one 5513 sub & an oyster royal, i am not qualified to know the value of this. I know on collectable vintage watches the redial can be a huge difference in price? What do you guys think the value is of this watch?

as most of the value in these watches is in the dial .. in my opinion this it's not really a good place to put your money .. no matter how low is the price compared to one in pristine conditions ..
there are so many fine Rolex around ....

Do you really want a watch with history of water ingress and a redial. Why bother at any price but peanuts.

I was told the watch was gone through & the water damage was all sorted out by a rolex tech. I would agree though that the water issue is very worry some as it is about the worst thing that could happen to a watch.

I was more interested in purchasing to re sell it fir $10, 000 & purchase an older bubbleback. I would not keep the watch, thats why I was wondering what you guys thought the value would be for resale?

I would definitely pass even though it is a nice looking watch. As Marcello said before you don't wanna be stuck with a watch that has a refinished dial should u wanna sell in the future.

Yes, that is the watch. She had it on her web site a week ago before she listed it on the bay. I inquired about it a week ago & talked to the seller. She has it on consignment from a lady who says it was her husband's watch. She seems honest about everything, she divulged the water damage so I think its all true. I have decided not to purchase it for resale because of the redial & more than that the water damage which she does not state on her bay ad, I think she should have said that but its her ad. Either way, thanks for the help everyone

That was what I thought it was worth but with having previous water issues I think its not a good choice, thanks for talking me out of it everyone. Also I think if she had stated on her bay ad that it had previously had water intrusion, I think it would have realized a lower amount & I would have divulged that info if I bought it & resold it.

I think you made the right decision. When you start to get over $5000, the values are decently well established and the lower-priced examples with "issues" are just that: often you are buying someone else's headache. Every watch I buy, I basically expect to get stuck with forever. Sometimes, they appreciate, sometimes the market loses interest, but if you only buy what you truly like, or buy very, very low, you run less risk of getting stuck with a piece. I think $7000 is a lot to tie up in a timepiece that you don't personally love.

As I stated above, and if anyone cares, this watch is NOT AUTHENTIC ROLEX. All price analysis is meaningless! The watch is bunk!

What gives it away? Lack of swiss made or fab swiss on the movement? The 17 rubis marking? The replacement crown all of these seem to have. Along with the fresh redial. :P

Case is not Rolex, nor movement. Compare photos of other known good examples. This is one of many non-Rolex period chronographs that have been "recast" as Rolex watches with minimal modifications.
