GMT IIc or SubC Date
The itch has returned, and I've narrowed it down to these two. I like the GMT as I travel a lot and have international clients so the GMT feature would come in handy. The downside is the PCLs. I already have a SS Daytona so I might prefer a non-PCL watch to mix things up. The Sub might fit the bill as I spend a lot of time on the water. Not as sure about the square lugs though. Thoughts?

I would go with the GMT, but I'm biased. I have an all black Y-series GMT-II that's been my favorite watch since I got it new over 10 years ago. I do a moderate amount of multi time zone travelling (less now that I'm retired than I did when I was working) and find the ability to quickly change the hours a very useful feature.

For the square lugs concern, look to the SD4000.
I hesitated every time on the SubC. It's a great piece but my GMTIIC wins every time. If I could justify two so similar watches I would go for the Sub ND, as I like the symmetry, but when I saw the new SD4000 I suspected my GMTIIC was going to get flipped. It didn't and the GMTIIC stays. So my vote is the GMTIIC: Different from the classically recognised Rolex, the SubC. i ware mine on a black and green national for stealth and a fun change down. |

I was in the same predicament 1 year ago, went to the AD planning to buy a Sub C date and walked out with a GMT, to me it looked flashier and I liked the extra complication. The last 2 pics are of the GMT 1 year later with daily wear, PCL's hold up fine, no one can see fine scratches unless your eye is pressed against the watch under a bright light, and can be polished to like new at service time. My daily wear is work and going out, not rugged outdoor stuff. Since you already have a dressier/flashier watch in the Daytona, I might go with the more rugged Sub. But since I'm a one Rolex guy, I'd go with the GMT.

Thanks guys. I plan on trying them on tomorrow and picking one up. I'm really torn between the two. Part of me thinks I need a Sub back in the rotation (used to have a tt sub I wasn't feeling anymore) whereas the GMT would be something I've never owned before.

GMT2c.....100%
Best modern 40mm Rolex made, IMO. Next would be 42mm Exp2. And wouldn't you know it...both GMT's.

I love my GMT-IIC. Go for it! I used to travel quite a lot between time zones, and the convenience of the quick-set hour hands is a great reminder, at least twice every trip, of what a great watch it really is.
In addition, I had customers and colleagues in Japan and Europe. Quickly seeing their current time when I was about to hop on an international conference call was a pleasure with this watch. My current job has me mostly traveling within my time zone. I miss using the GMT functions! But it's still a fantastic watch, a stunner.

If you travel frequently
It's a no brainer - GMT. If you never travel beyond your time zone then the Sub is probably a reasonable bet.

SubC hands down for me personally. Had both twice and ended up with the SubC as my daily wearer. The glide lock clasp and brushed bracelet are must haves IMO, watch always looks brand new and you can't see scratches on it until you hold it up in the light and inspect it closely. I also prefer the look of the Sub. Just my two cents.

Had both for the last year. The sub C was getting very little wrist time. GMT BLNR was getting all the Rolex time. I got rid of the sub and kept the GMT. Ended up trading the Sub on a Datejust. Both are very fine watches. I have ended up liking the PCL. Good luck.
