1966 Submariner Questions

Hello All,

I'm new to the forum. My wife's cousin owns a jewelry story and he always calls me when he gets interesting watches come in.

He's offered me the submariner in the picture for about 2/3 of the price he plans on trying to get for it in the store. It is all original except the crystal and the movement is (apparently) pristine. I've seen online that having the metres first is the more desirable dial. I also can't seem to find many with the blue bezel. Any additional information you may be able to tell me from the pic would be greatly appreciated. Prices on the internet seem to vary widely so I would be interested if anyone can give me a reasonable range. There is no box or papers.

The bezel is not blue, it's faded--and a bit scratched up. The lugs look heavily polished and the bracelet is obviously loose. Decent dial and hands in that pic. May make a nice beater on strap if cheap.

The dial plots are discoloured which may mean moisture has entered the watch at some point.
Be sure to crack the back open and check for any corrosion.
A meters first like this if all checks out ok commands upwards of $7000 on bracelet.
Would need better pics of dial and hands for moisture ingress and of the case to determine the amount of polishing that has taken place.

I'll be using Canadian dollar which is abou $0.88 US right now.

He wants 8k from me but says he'd put it up for 12k in the store and that they are going for 14+ online. I've seen a wide range of similar pieces on chrono24 for 8k-14k.

That's the only picture I took but the original is very high resolution. I can crop it closer when I get infront of a computer. Again, he says the movement is very clean and free of water damage. It has just been serviced.

If they were going for $14k online, I think we would all be selling right now :)

If he offered it to you at $5k it would be a nice brother-in-law deal...any more is too much especially in that condition.

Is it a rivet bracelet they tend to get sloppy quick, anyway, I've never heard a movement described as "pristine". Be careful, it's all about price, condition and originality....

Hey welcome fellow Canuck! I have to agree his price to you would be wishful retail, no expert but if he's doing you a favor price should be 5 to 6k. The words "over polished" get used a lot if the case no longer has nice thick lugs and sharp chamfers. I like the look of the dial. The watch is almost 49 years old! The word worn comes to mind after all its a tool watch!

My 2c -I have the same model/year, a bit polished but with better lume (imo) and paid a fraction of this price the year before last. If there isn't something rather special about this watch that I miss, this way way overpriced for a 5513. ;-) I know, 5513 are rising, but I'm sure you can find a better deal here or at a good vintages watches dealer.

My 3 c -

Movement of a Watch this age is probably NEVER pristine, unless revised (had mine done this year, so if you are going to revise it, plan a part of your budget for that ;-))

The subby is much, much, much nicer with the Tropic crystal, the domed the better. You can get decent aftermarket-domes that are at least better-looking than the replacement-crystals. Vintage crystals are a pain to get by. A 8000$ 5513 with replacements parts would not thrill me that much.

I think the lime hasn't aged nicely (looks like it got wet, somehow?) and the hands - hard to tell - look like the tritium is cracking?

Bezel-Pearl doesn't match the dial, which is always nice, I think.

Hard to tell from the image, but you should check how much polishing that case got. For that price it'd have to be like untouched ;-D. (And doesn't look that way at all on the image).

I'm not big on bracelets (leather for me) and photos can misguide, but boy, that does look stretched.

Frankly, 12 K is what I'd expect for a 5512 gilt. Even with the raising prices, this 5513 above shouldn't be more than 6K. And even then. If you have 8000 to spend, there are better options.

This is a '68 with a minty rivet bracelet. After the specks of loose tritium were blown off the dial (shown in this pic) it sold north of $8k USD locally just last month, for comparison.

I think retail on it is about $7,000 with the bracelet, very cool faded insert!
