A gift from my grandpa
Hello,
Since my grandpa's passing of 13 years ago, he lefted me his DateJust. The watch was stored at a bank vault for 13 years and today, I finally had time to visit the bank to pick up the watch. The watch was purchased in Hong Kong back in the mid 70's and was very well taken care off. The watch will be sent to RSC if they are willing to service a watch at that age. Sorry for the low quality phone pictures. Any comments are greatly appreciated. |

Hi, it is a 1601, and a mighty fine watch.
Rolex will have no problem in servicing that watch

Hi Phillip, you're a lucky man. It's a bit shocking to think you're only collecting it after 13 years! Enjoy it. Jonathan

Steve & Jonathan,
Thank you for responding.. I was a bit young when my grandpa passed away. I think its finally time to wear the watch and have something from my grandpa with me. Any more info on the 1601 would be greatly appreciated. |

I did a ton of research on my 1977 1603. They are essentually the same watch Phil. Should be 1575 non quick set movement. Rolex Datejust Model 1601 Stainless Steel Dial - Oyster Silver Case - Steel 36mm Jubilee style band. Plastic Crystal Non Quick Set 1575 movement, bph I think is 21,600. It might have 14 ct white gold bezel too. My 1603 was engine cut (machined) steel. Does it have a silver dial? The RSC can service it for sure but at 1970's era the Jubilee bracelet may be streched. The cool thing is after a service, a polish and a buff up it will look new and your average Joe won't even know it's 30 plus years old. Some AD's and all Grey dealers can polish that Acrylic crystal if it scratches. |

Great looking 1601 Datejust. It's got the "pie-pan" dial and acrylic crystal that in my opinion gives it a great vintage look. I had a 1601 with those same hour markers which you don't see alot of. I wish i had not sold it. I believe the 1601 had the 1575 movement for a good portion of its production. I believe they made the 1601 through the early 80s. Rolex service or good watchmaker will send it back looking new !! Post up some more pics if you get a chance.

If I read the tables right you have two possible movements in that watch. When you find out which you can go here to get some more information on the movement. http://www.ranfft.de/cgi-bin/bidfun-...anfft&91&2uswk Good luck with your "new" watch! |

Sorry to hear about your Grandpa, what he had left you is something more than just a watch. I'm sure you will cherish the watch forever and the memories of your Grandpa.
BTW, welcome to TRF.

One more thing that I wanted to add. I didn't dare to adjust the time, nor the date because of the watch not moving for 13 years, but the date was showing the 23rd.
Since it was April 23rd, when I picked up the watch. I guess it was a sign. Thank you for all the nice comments. I will make sure to get some quality pictures as I get more lighting in the daytime. |

Welcome to TRF!
Very nice 1601! A true classic. I love the silver dial, and the plexi crystal just gives this timepiece this extra touch of class. Congrats and thanks for sharing the pics!

Many congrats on a wonderful piece. In a very real sense heirloom pieces are priceless. Rolex should service with no problem, then enjoy a great example of family heritage.

Welcome ot the TRF,
I love my heirlooms, I have 105 years worth. A 1905 South Bend pocket that was my GG Grandpa's given to me by my great uncle. A 1941 Hamilton, Stewart model w/ box set that was my granfathers (both American made) A 1978 17 Jewel Seiko Automatic that was my dad's (restored) A 1977 1603 Datejust similar to your 1601. My was a non Qk set 1575 movement and an oyster braclet w/ silver dial and engine turned bezel. They sell in mint to good condtion for about $1500 US. Cherrish the heirloom because it is a memory for your grand dad and it doesn't hurt that it's a Rolex. |

Thank you all for replying. Over the years, I have been on many forums and this has to be one of the best. You guys are very welcoming.
I took some quick snapshots, but due to lighting, it still turned out bad. |

Phillip,
Your Datejust is in BEAUTIFUL condition! I think with a Rolex service and a polish it will be identical to a new watch! These watches can be like mini time capsules.... Rolex1 |
