I can't believe watches are so addictive!

So, I've been wanting a Rolex for 7ish years now. I almost bought it several times, but I could never bring myself to drop 5 grand on a watch. As many of you know I finally "broke" down and did it. I decided my 30th birthday should be special. So before the price increase occurred, I bought a Sub Date (16610) the day before the increase.

Long story very short, it was the best 5 grand I ever spent!!!!!!!!

Before I bought my 16610, I thought it would be the only watch I would ever need. Maybe a beater to wear when situations don't call for a Rolex, but only the one "nice" watch. I'm not afraid to wear it by any means as I have worn it pretty much everyday since I got it, except in those situations mentioned prior.

Seeing how happy this watch makes me, I want more, more, more. I almost feel out of control. It doesn't help that work is super slow right now and I spend a lot of time on the forums, shopping, etc. But now my thoughts watches being too expensive are out the window. I want so many now and I'm almost seeing myself as having them. Hell, today I went to the AD and tried on several Panerai. I just added another damn one to the list.

I just can't believe how addictive these things are. I mean one of my first thoughts today was that I was going to go look at watches at the AD! Ugh. I think I might need help. I mean look at this list of watches I want/need.

Omega 42mm Black Moon (3570.50)
Omega 41mm Black SMP (2254.50)
Panerai 45mm Manual Radiomir w/sec (Pam 183)
Panerai 40mm Black Auto Luminor on bracelet w/sec w/date (Pam 50)
Rolex 40mm SS/Pt Yachtmaster (16622)
Seiko 42mm Hugh Orange Diver (SNM037)

Ugh.............................

I agree, watches are addictive

Every time I call in to see my AD, I seem to leave with a new one

A Rolex is not an investment. How old are you? This kind of money would make a nice nest egg some day as most people are not saving enough money for retirement. My investment planner has me on the way to having 1.5 million when I retire. I will probably need all of that just to pay for our health care and have a little enjoyment in life. I max out my IRA every year and I just paid over 60K for my vehicle so Elizabeth and I have no car payments. Now we can take the $737.00 per month that we were paying on a car payment and start adding even more to our annual retirement contribution.

I know a watch is addictive and it's fun to collect. This kind of money would get you started to having a nice retirement down the road. My .02 cents says to put the money in a nice investment portfolio.

Good luck. It's always tempting to spend. It's more disciplined to save.

I was just joking about the investing aspect of a watch. Trust me I save. Maxed out 401k and maxed out Roth IRA since I've been out of college. I also have auto deducts to my Vanguard with every paycheck. I have 1 years worth of cash in the bank in living expenses. I'm ok. I just bought my first one and now I can't seem to stop thinking about watches. That 183 or Platty is going to happen sooner or later!!!!!!!

Thanks for bring it up however; Most Americans don't save for retirement. I'm saving for a beach house and retirement!!!!! Social security won't be there!!

Good for you. Wise words. I think the American people will not stand for the loss of social security. They will have to increase the amount on which they collect currently to make it more solvent.

You guys are absolutely right -- it is a sickness, and a highly contagious one!!! Anyway, as you've said, there's no better consolation than to share what I'd rather call our common "passion" with all you TRFers!

Yes, Rolex watches are addictive. I have been wanting one for the past couple of years. Every time we would go by an AD, I would stop and go in to just look (and drool). Finally, my wife said just buy the one you have been wanting and get it over with. I did.... and it has been the best money I have spent on myself.

Well, you gotta be careful of what investment portfolio you put it in too... My super (similar to 401k) has dropped 10% since Jul 1 07 including the money I put in there regularly... lucky I got some back in the stock market lately but I'm still crying!

That's interesting Mik, watches can be very addictive, I know it has happened to me and a lot of others on this forum too, that I am sure.
Make considered purchases and I would agree with others that you can't really think of them as an investment as such, there is always a buy price and a sell price, the former is save in exceptional circumstances generally always higher than the latter.
Having said all that, it is great to hear that you are enjoying your Sub soo much.
I like the point you make that it does take a lot to buy a first $5,000 watch, but after that it just gets easier and easier,

well, Terry's right...he's got a great nest egg and plan(more than i'm willing to bet, most people)....watches are not a great investment, UNLESS you buy vintage and hold, hold, hold. Another thing about a rolex watch, is that it can be converted to cash anytime. SO for an investment listen to members like Terry. If you're going to invest in watches, buy vintage, authentic and hold them. If you just want a watch you can turn over whenver you want for cash if you need it or a new watch, then Rolex will hold you in good stead(but if you flip right after you buy, you'll take a 10-20% bath). JMHO.
best,
dan

I agree highly. There are awesome people on this forum that make me want to stick around. I value everyone's opinions, like to hear what other's have to say, and enjoy the good humor. I've been on other forums; this one is the best.
