Should I change the dial on my Daytona?

I have been sitting on the fence about this for quite a while. I purchased a Daytona Black racing Dial along with all the red hands some time ago. My intention was to swap dials on a stainless Daytona I hardly wear for one reason or another. I thought the dial change would spice up the Daytona and make me wear it more. After reading some comments in this forum about Dial swaps and the appearance of misrepresentation, I had second thoughts. I have to decide.

Your opinions on Dial change, pros and cons. Also, any pitfalls about the swap?

You already have the parts and if you like it why not do it?
There are plenty who did this type of dial swap.

I don't like the idea of wearing a precious-metal-only dial on a stainless steel watch.

Yes do it. It's your watch and no one else's opinion matters. It looks way better and you won't regret it!

The case/bezel of the 116520 is different from other full precious metal Daytona. Any WIS would be able to tell.

But it's your watch, so do whatever makes you happy.

Responses like this never cease to amaze me. "Any WIS would be able to tell..." Tell what? That he likes a particular dial/case combo better? The shame!
(Used as a sample, nothing against this particular poster.)

It is ASSUMED that any alteration is an attempt to "fake" something. Why is "I like this combination" so hard to understand for some?

People aren't understanding this....I didnt, and I'm sure others don't change the dial to try and fool anyone into thinking its precious metal, I did it simply because I much prefer the white gold dials!

As it happens, I now own the white gold Daytona 116509

Totally agree here - I have the SS Daytona and could purchase the WG version if I wanted it, but simply prefer SS to WG and like the WG dial options better...therefore I now have a SS Panda with red hands!

Do it! B/c the SS only comes in black and white, I had thought about swapping my white for a panda b/c I really like the panda dial, which is what it comes down to...what do you like. You can always swap it back if you decide to sell or RSC.

NO ONE else will know or care!!

Some people prefer all original parts, others like to mod their watches. No law against modding an SS Daytona with PM parts.

Yup modding with a genuine Rolex dial is fine, but not frankening it with a fake one.

It's your watch, if you prefer another dial then go ahead. You can always change back.

I think some folks get upset about that mod because they feel it affects the perceived exclusivity of the wg models, which they might own. I say your watch, your rules.

Wow, the responses are definitely split in the middle. I understand that it is my watch, and it is up to me. I'm realizing that my indecisiveness is really a matter of my sensitivity about being thought of as a pretender. I do have a WG Daytona with the white dial in a leather strap that I feel great wearing. I might have to upgrade to a WG black dial, given my reluctance to swap dials. I'm not sure I'll ever be comfortable wearing a modded watch.

Have a great day nice folks.

Sure, why not? My only knock on the SS model is that there are only two dial offerings and they're kind of plain jane...so knock yourself out. You can always swap back if you don't like it.

As an aside, you might want to source a set of hands too...I hear that they can be damaged pretty easily in the dial changing process.

Honestly I would have a hard time doing it but the WG daytona has some of the nicest dials... if you already have the parts there is no harm in doing it.

I've thought about this too and if I actually want to do it. The more PM I try on, the more I like SS. I love the presence of PM, but for an all day everyday watch, i like the lightness of the SS Daytona.

I do love the SS Daytona's white dial, so I'm not looking to make a change anytime soon.

I say you pays your money you makes your choice! The difference of opinion is what makes this forum unique and me so pleased I left another forum to come join. Embrace other opinions, but do what sings to you.
I love those PM dials and am considering one myself. Let us know how it goes.

Do it, love mine, can go back to original at any time!

I really don't care how others feel, plenty of unmodded choices in the stable.

I saw this Mod on the forum and loved the red hands as they are much easier to read than the white gold on black. So I decided to split the difference, I bought the red hands and I'm going to have them installed on the original dial. I'll post pictures when it's done.

I did it mainly because I wanted arabic numbers and prefer that to the usual SS dials. I've loved the black racing dial for years but decided to go with the panda because of the lume.

I completely understand both viewpoints, but for me it is all about personal taste.

Finally, it's not like it's a cheap modification, the cost of the dial is more than what most people pay for a watch entirely. That and having to find a watchmaker who is willing to do the switch and later service the watch means one has to be very motivated to undertake this project!

I say go for it or sell the dial and hands to somebody who will .
