Daytona 6262

I an now the owner of my dad's Rolex Daytona 6262. I had it serviced by a Rolex Registered/Certified jeweler, Reis Nichols in Indianapolis. In 1995 they called me during a service and told me that the push buttons needed to be changed to a new style (Screw Down) due to the old ones not holding pressure. I tried to get the old pushers back and they told me Rolex would not allow them to give me the old parts.

So how bad is my watch with out the correct pushers???? I have tried to find the original style pushers and cant find them anywhere.

The "Vintage Rolex Forum" has a Marketplace where a lot of vintage parts are listed, you might try there. It is more valuable with the original pushers.

Any pictures ?

The change affects the value as a vintage IMO, but the over all condition is what counts.

Yes, photos, please. Interested to see the dial, and whether it's a PN.

Photos 6262

My dad received this watch from a friend of his who was the the Rolls Royce dealer in West Palm Beach, FL back in the early 1970's as a payback for a loan. It has been the family ever since. The Indianapolis jeweler is the only one who has cracked the case.

I really appreciate any advice I can get.

Thank-you

I'm not an expert by any means but wouldn't a 6262 have pump pushers?

Yes, it did, read my previous post.

In 1995 they called me during a service and told me that the push buttons needed to be changed to a new style (Screw Down) due to the old ones not holding pressure. I tried to get the old pushers back and they told me Rolex would not allow them to give me the old parts.

Gotcha. I should pay better attention. Fantastic looking watch regardless.

Its not cheap to replace them, but worth the effort. It looks much better as she was intended...here is her twin.
A shame the AD is so clueless.

finding pushers isn't hard , think I've got several sets lying around , but I've got a nasty feeling that they reem out the pushers holes to fit the larger screw pushers ( though this is the first time i recall seeing a service centre do this ..especially as the 6262 wasn't an oyster not particularly waterproof)....im at the watchmaker tomorrow, if you drop me a PM to remind me ill ask the question if you physically can go backwards.

He told me that both push buttons have the same thread and that they are interchangeable.

mine had one screw down pusher installed when I found it...actually installed by a Rolex AD, go figure. Bob Ridley restored the watch to its current condition and had no issue installing the correct pushers.

interesting ...i wont argue but I'm sure i remember a friend having a real problem with this trying to go backward , he had one sloppy watcmaker suggest just guncking it up with lock tight type compound and 'it'd be fine',,,maybe just file it away that it MIGHT not be that straight forward.

heres a pic of a thread section of a mk1 pusher next to a pumper pusher, seems like a slightly bigger bore on the screwpusher to me which is what i understood - they had to widen out the thread on a pumper case to take the screw .....

Why is Rolex so clueless? Why wouldn't they have a vintage restoration department? They could make serious bank with all the parts they have. It is senseless!

In 1995 the marketplace was very different... No surprise they swapped the pushers for something more functional. Still a gorgeous piece!

screw pushers are consider to make the case functionally waterproof and therefore worthy of carrying the name ''oyster''.... pumpers don't come even close.

It looks great either way, and it's an awesome story. Isn't in crazy to think that those pushers were swapped out 20 years ago now? The game has certainly changed a lot since then.

+1, i'd leave it if you plan on wearing much. If they enlarged the orifice's if not mistaken its a chore for an expert to repair case and add correct pushers. Especially if you have the paperwork from RSC. Part of watches history. Luck with your decision. m

Thank-you everyone, you have all been very helpful!! And Thanks to Pettai for the link to the pushers. Another thing I found out that I never noticed, is that the DAYTONA is actually a light blue, interesting after all these years.

It was originally white, but the paint used during that period faded to a light blue on some dials.
