Hardest day as a pet owner

Today we had to put down our 17 y/o cat, Lucas. My wife has had him since he was a kitten. A few days ago he quit eating and the vet said his kidneys were failing. My wife got home from a business trip in time to spend last night with him. It was the first pet either of us had to go through this with and was much harder than I expected.

Sorry to hear. We get so attached to the little guys since they are always present. We lost one this summer far too soon, only ten. Similar situation, lost his voracious appetite, nothing the vet could do.

Sorry for your loss!

It is a tough decision but we - as pet owners - do not want to see them suffer either..

I'm a dog man, not a cat man. Three years ago I went through the same awful thing with my 14 year old German Shepherd called Naya.

I mourn to this day and I know exactly how you feel right now.

The best advice I can give sounds hard.....go get yourselves a wonderful new young pet as soon on as possible. I know it wiill feel heartless......bit it's not.

Thanks everyone! We still have another 18 year old cat but my wife is already trying to decide if getting a kitten or adopting a couple year old cat would be best. Whenever she is ready we will go to the humane society and see what she falls in love with.

So sorry for your loss. We have had to do this with a three of our cats and until you go through it you don't realize just how hard it is. Cats are especially hard because they don't whine or complain when they are not feeling well so it is hard to tell how much pain they are in.

Take solace in knowing you did the right thing for the right reason.

Sorry for your loss. I still remember the day we had to put our lab down like it was yesterday. One of the toughest days of my life. Time will help, but on occasion, I still expect him to come trotting into the kitchen to clean up an ice cube I've dropped. Take it slow and remember the good times.

I am very sorry for your loss. May it be a consolation to you that every minute of his life Lucas felt safe and loved by you and your family. Time will help you to slowly get used to life without him. Best wishes.

I feel your pain. I'm presently going through some issues with one of my dogs. She is getting better however. I thought she was dying and I did not realize just how much I loved her until she got sick.

So sorry. I have an 18 year-old Siamese cat, and she is starting to really slow down. I dread what a you are feeling now. These animals live with us for decades, and they are family.

I am so sorry for your loss. One of the hardest things for loving parents of a beloved pet is to make the decision to send them to a better place. I feel for you and your wife as I did the same thing last year.

It's such a blessing to have a loving pet in the family but its never easy making that decision. Find comfort that he is no longer suffering
