What is the definition of "expanding links" in a bracelet?

Could someone help me out w/ a definition of this as it relates to vintage watches? Thanks!

I believe that expanding links are for divers watches where you could easily expand the bracelet to fit over the scuba suit! But I might be wrong, wait a while and the pro's will be here shortly!

Dell, at one time Rolex had an oyster bracelet with an expanding link option. The bracelet experts can expand on how they were made.

I believe the option was dropped in the mid 60s as the expending proved to be less than ideal as far as durability.

Rolex included a paper with the option warning that winding the watch while on the wrist could fatigue the links.

They are a bit on the rare side today. I believe a couple members here have them on watches, I'm sure they can "expand" on them.
