California Vacation advice please?

Hi,

So I’m just after a little bit of advice please? A couple of years ago I went to California and had a fantastic time, I started out in San Francisco for a few days then drove down the coast we looked at staying in Monterey but all the hotels were full for some conference so we stopped in Carmel (Really liked Carmel) but the weather was not great so speaking to a restaurant owner one night he suggested if we liked Carmel we should try Santa Barbara which we did and really enjoyed. We then ended up driving back to San Fran to catch a plane to Las Vegas for 4 days in The Bellagio before heading home (I know we should have driven to Vegas but we’d booked the flights etc).

So this time we are thinking of flying into San Diego and working our way up to LA then going to Hawaii for a few nights before flying home. So I’m after any recommendations for my fellow TRF’s please? I know quite a few of you live out that way. I know from my last trip the tips from the locals were the best and we managed to find some lovely restaurants and nice places to stay from advice from local people. Anywhere nice worth stopping on the way up? What’s LA like? I have heard horror stories from people but am open minded enough to try it if it’s worth it? Where’s nice to stay?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

SoCal is about beaches, flip flops, fish taco's and surfing.

Great stops heading north from SD include La Jolla, San Clemente, Newport Beach and Huntington Beach.

I'd go to Coronado Bay in San Diego. I rented a jet ski while there with a girlfriend in college, and it was awesome to take it under than beautiful bridge and in the bay with all of those cool Naval ships around.

The Hotel La Valencia Hotel is the greatest little hidden spot in SoCal, perfect for a breakfast or lunch in their courtyard.

L.A. is a lot of things:

For fine dining or just really good food - check out Melisse, Providence, Spago, Cut, Manhattan Beach Post, Fishing With Dynamite, or Urasawa.

Check out Beverly Hills / Rodeo Drive/Sunset Blvd. and see some of the most beautiful and wealthy people in the world. Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, Bentley's galore. Various watch boutiques to browse. You can even see Prince Khalifa's Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari LaFerrari, and Mclaren P1 parked in the alley of the Beverly Wilshire hotel. Likely to bump into celebrities.

Go hiking in the trails near the Griffith Observatory and get a really nice view of the L.A. basin or up Runyon Canyon to the Hollywood Sign.

Any interest in Disneyland / California Adventure?

I once spent an exciting afternoon dodging beet trucks in the Central Valley.

Awesome sushi and Mexican nosh in LA. I lived there in the early 90s for 3+ years and loved it. Check out Beverly Hills/Rodeo, Sunset/Hollywood, and Melrose Ave great for shopping and people-watching, and Venice/Santa Monica for beach action. I'd imagine a lot has changed since then (in terms of restaurants/clubs). Good suggestions so far. Have fun. Dude.

Casino Point on Catalina Island is a nice place to dive and fairly easy to get to from Long Beach. There are plenty of good dive boats as well. PM me if you have specific questions about diving. I am a diver and have over 350 dives in the beautiful SoCal waters, including San Diego/La Jolla area.

I work in Compton. It's okay. Nobody bothers me and my PP, ALS, FPJ, or JLCs.

Don't miss LaJolla and Laguna Beach. And if you're going to do any watch browsing then Beverly Hills is a must.

A place in SoCal where you want to likely stay clear of.

People being pulled out of cars at gun point because they took a wrong turn, is that not bad enough? Not my idea of a fun vacation to be honest!

The central coast is my favourite. If you're heading north to SF Fron San Diego, stop at San Luis Obispo, Atascadero, and Monteray.

SoCal has some of the most beautiful women on the planet! Great food, museums (Getty, Norton Simon, etc), amusement parks, beaches and many other things to do.

I lived there while in college (UCLA) and miss it. Still have friends and some relatives there and I get down there a few times a year.

By the way, if you are ever in Compton, one of the best places for BBQ is Bludsoe's.
