Off shore work

My 26 year old son interviewing for a job in the gulf.

Any off shore guys out there that can give insight into the lifestyle?

Had friends in the late 80's that made big bucks doing very dangerous work. My observation work is best for singles to many hours and not a culture for people with family obligations

I work for a European company as a Captain world wide.
Working a minimum of 12 hour shifts 7 days a week for 6 weeks straight and than 6 weeks off. Varies per company.
Safety standards are high and cannot be compromised. It's a lot of fun if you have a good team onboard. Workload is high and some may consider it a tough job. Pays reasonably, not like the old days anymore.
Depending on your rank but in general a lot of maintenance has to be done which may consists of chipping and painting to name one.
If you have the right attitude and perseverance career opportunities are there. I started as an ordinary seaman and found out quickly that I needed to go back to school to climb the ranks. For a decade I worked, back to school worked etc.
It totally ruined my social life now nearing 50. Can't be a member of a sports team or so. With progressing years you'll loose friends etc. Sometimes I think that that was too much of a high price to pay.
Looking back I would have gone into the Engineering part of Shipping rather than the Nautical side. Less stress and engines are easier to work with than with people. In general I still like what I do.
I wish your son good luck with his application.
