Two weeks with the SS Daytona

"A timing device of superior stature. It's accuracy, efficiency and reliability make it one of the finest examples of the time keeping art. A classic instance of form following function yielding an astonishing result."
- Rolex

First, I know you can't tell from a picture but none of the reviews mentioned the weight. Not that it's heavy, it's not, it's just heavier than I thought it would be. Feels niiiice on the wrist.

The dial, in so many pictures, appears flat and without any interesting features but in fact has sharp bevels on the sub dials and, along with the hands, has great detail in real life.

Accuracy over the last week (first week I didn't time it) averaged out to an impressive +0.5/day

The crown is a triplock - I thought triplock were for Divers and this would be a two dot crown. Speaking of the crown, it is also thicker than I thought it would be. I anticipated a thinner crown like on my old EXPII's & GMT's. I am pleasantly surprised on both counts

Even though the lume plots are larger on this than on the Zenith Daytona, they are still small but was happy to see that despite their size, the lume is actually not bad. The blue color is nice to look at and lasts honestly a lot longer than I thought. Again, I am pleasantly surprised.

Screw Down pushers - Yeah, I know a few folks don't like having to wriggle their fingers under the case to unscrew or even take off the watch to start the chrono. Happy to report that on the Daytona the pushers do not rest on the lower half of the case so even for my big fingers I have zero problem unscrewing them and starting the chorine keeping the watch on my wrist. Disclaimer, I don't really time anything, except maybe a steak on the grill so. If you are a heavy chorine user I can see where screw down pushers on any watch would be a hassle.

PCL's - yeah they are bright, no getting around that. But here's the thing, they should be brushed on Subs & GMT's but they "fit" the Daytona and they actually work in the big picture. That is to say, if you don't obsess over them and actually look at the watch as a whole, they actually work for the Daytona.

Wearability and size - of course this is subjective but the 40mm case is super comfortable, there really is no there way to put it

Great. Now, are you going to buy one, or are you just testing one out? IMO, Daytona is the next rung on the evolutionary ladder. A must for all serious collectors.

Another watch I had never really considered for myself, but after reading this and other posts on here and looking at some of the amazing pictures I definitely see a Daytona in my future.

Congratulations on yours

Most comfortable watch on bracelet I've ever owned. Links are buttery smooth on the wrist and the size is perfect! Great photos!

Nicely done.

Have to agree that the subdials really add something special to the watch. They really add some dimension to the dial and the concentric circles are very appealing.

I completely dismissed the watch until I saw it in person; then, I had to have it.

It's a great watch no doubt. My only semi-non-realistic wish for it would be AR coating. The reflectivity of the crystal I think can make the superb detail of the dial difficult to see (especially the black dial). I do have non-realistic wishes too but those are for another thread and another day.

Of the five good watches I have (2 Rolex, 3 Tudor) the Daytona is the least accurate, but probably the most consistent. After an RSC service in Aug. 2013 it's +5 on my wrist, barely meeting COSC specs, and since all positions run fast I can't self-regulate it like I can all my other watches. It would be a matter of having it internally regulated, but I won't bother since I only wear it for short periods on special occasions. You'd think RSC could get it a bit closer, however.

The Daytona and my 1675 GMT are the most comfortable watches of the group.

Great review and pictures! Simply beautiful watch! One question - how's the fit of the bracelet? Does the SS Daytona come with the GlideLock clasp, so you can easily re-size?

Thanks everyone!

Yes, this one is mine. It was/is a stretch for me but definitely worth it

Yes, one of those watches that really, really is worth wearing one and not judging on just pictures

No, this has the easy-link (not glide) and easy to adjust and a great feature.

Your 116520 accuracy is impressive +0.5/day!
Made all of my watches look like chunks of paper weight.
I'll sell my entire collection just to get one with that accuracy.

Did you simply lucked out? Huge congratulations!

Can anyone share thoughts if a full Rolex movement overhaul can nail accuracy this precisely?
If it's the original watch maker having better expertise?

While I really like the look of the Daytona and would like to eventually own one, I have the feeling that it would simply be more of a novelty watch and not get the wrist time that my two Submariners get. The lack of a date function is also a negative for me. Funny how most of you who own this watch never really use the stopwatch function other than for silly little things such as timing a steak on the grill, etc.,etc. Guess I am a Submariner person more than anything and Subs are a part of my DNA as I have worn them exclusively for many years.

Using a Daytona to time a steak is no more silly or funny than a Sub in a swimming pool.

But isn't that analogous to saying most Sub owners never take them more than 10 feet deep (or whatever pool they're in)?

This Daytona and my old Pelagos have been the most accurate of of my past Rolexes and Tudors by far. If they are within COSC I don't fret or worry about it. That being said, it is nice to have this one be that accurate.

And no, I haven't been to the moon but I've enjoyed three Speedies, nor do I dive but have enjoyed 3 Submariners, 3 Panerai and 2 JLC divers. I am not a train conductor, yet I enjoy my Railmaster. I am not a pilot, still I have enjoyed my IWC pilot watch and 2 Sinn pilot, watches and so and so on.....you see I enjoy watches irregardless of genre and in spite of how someone tells how I am to enjoy them.

Thanks again, guys.
