All this talk of patina begs the question.....
what did a brand new 1964 5513, 1970 5513, 1971 1665, or 1969 1675, etc etc etc look like the day it was made .... does anyone have any good quality original photos to share?

Here's what one looked like on my wrist 150ft underwater in 1965, two years after I bought it:

In the summers of 1964/65 I worked part-time as a diver in support of a project developing electronic oceanographic instrumentation. This pic was taken about 20 miles off Panama City, FL at one of three stations where we had strings of peanut floats at various depths to investigate rates and types of biological fouling that might affect those newly developed instruments. The top line on the board is the date, the second line indicates which particular float this one is. I was paid $50 a day, which was a lot of money then, and this work helped put me through graduate school. |

It's hard enough trying to figure out what I need to forget...to make room for what I want to remember.... if you can remember the 60's, you weren't there. Bob |

I'll have a dig around. I saw a 1967 rolex sales brochure in my watch guys shop recently and the lume on the sports models were not white. Almost a green tinge similar to how they seem now if in good condition. Sure it wasn't just the colours in the pics ageing as the rest of the paper showed normal white. To think they were bright white from day 1 is incorrect.

Yeah, sorry OP - got side-tracked.
You saw the 1665 I posted, right? I'd think that's a fairly close time-capsule. Are you chasing after a NOS watch, then? Or just curious? |
