What is vintage?
Hey everybody, just a quick simple question. Before what year do you consider "vintage". I bought an '87 DJ and to me being born in '93 I would consider this watch vintage being older than me. What do you think?

Another question for you guys, has anyone ever put a gold clasp on the TT jubilee bracelet? Do they make a yellow gold clasp?

Also try telling a 31 year old woman that you regard her as vintage, I think you could forget about getting your evil way with her.

It's in the eye of the beholder.

It used to be a watch older than 25 years. Then in the 80's Rolex switched to sapphire crystals and some curmudgeons drew a line in the sand and, to this day, still proclaim "it must be acrylic".. (of course that doesn't explain what a vintage watch was when they were all plastic), and that was more than 30 years ago... Naturally, such definitions leave out many models that are long gone: the original GMT II 16760, Zenith Daytonas, 16800 and 168000 Subs, etc., and even your DJ that is pushing 30 years... If you want to call them vintage, go ahead.. There isn't a law about it and the community probably still won't be in unison in another 50 years..

IMO, a vintage Rolex should have at least one of the following things:
1) Plexi crystal 2) Matte Dial 3) Tritium/Radium lume on the dial/hands 4) Lug Holes Generally speaking, I like to think of any watch older than two generations old as vintage. Where things get tricky are with watches that had a long production run like the 5513. I think of the later models as transitional (same with the late model 16750). Just my |
