Rolex 1655 Explorer II (Steve McQueen), questions on authenticity and value...help!
Calling all experts! I have the opportunity to purchase this watch at what I believe is a good value, but I will have to travel a bit to go pick it up. Before I commit to doing so, I thought I would ping the forum for some feedback. The photos are not great, but it is all that I have access to right now. No photos of the paperwork, no knowledge of the serial number yet either. Here are my questions:
1 - Opinions of authenticity? Looks legit to me, maybe replacement hands? The only thing that throws me off the bat would be the box, which I do not believe is period-correct? 2 - As far as I can tell, the dial is tritium, but at the bottom, it only says "SWISS"...I have read conflicting stories on whether this is a service dial or not? 3 - Does the bracelet appear to be accurate, per the watch? Bracelet number appears to be 93163, endlinks appear to be 71N 4 - Any opinion of value? What would be a good deal? |

Those aren't higher resolution..... They're higher magnification..
There's a whole world of difference between resolution and magnification

Awful. The polishing cloth is worth more.

I guess that auction is getting closer. You are the second person to start a thread asking whether this watch is authentic.
Save your gas money.

Awful fake. And I really hope people stop using "Steve McQueen" in the title of posts about the 1655.

Steve McQueen never owned this reference nor are there any photos showing him even wearing one at an AD's...

I call my Steve McQueen a 1655. Steve was my motorcycle idol but not my watch idol.

Sorry for the SM reference drama...just trying to create a title that would solicit the greatest amount of responses (which worked). Most of those responses were respectful, knowledgeable, and helpful (for which I am grateful), the rest however were largely focused on critiquing the Steve McQueen reference.
I am fully aware the watch is a (fake) 1655; and should note that SM is insignificant to me personally. The same is true of this watch; if it was real (and a bargain), I was simply going to flip it to someone who would appreciate it; just not my cup of tea. I think it is important to acknowledge that this forum is utilized by - and relies on - a wide variety of users who range from hobbyists at best to true professionals, and while the SM reference may carry a significantly negative connotation for the latter, it may also be the only reference recognized by the former. The opinion of both are important to me. As a side note as well, I guess I also owe a second formal forum apology for inappropriately the term "resolution;" the photos were obviously enlarged, and the resolution not increased. I am a graphic professional with access to the full Adobe Creative Suite and was doing the best I could with what was provided to me. If you check some of my other for-sale postings, I try to pride myself on high-quality, high-resolution photography. That said, I am glad that I was able to edify someones syntactical awareness. I think this forum would be a good source for professional proof-readers; I have to write many reports, if anyone is interested, let me know. Satire aside, thanks for the feedback from all; I appreciate the variety of perspectives, and the validation of thoughts that were growing int he back of my mind regarding the authenticity. Obviously, I am not as familiar with this model as others and appreciate that there are collectors in this community who are willing to share their respected opinions. |
