Rolex Submariner Dial - "Spider"

Hi guys!

What do you think about this dial?

http://www.chrono24.com/en/rolex/dia...num=0&tab=pics

Is that fake? Year? Expensive?

Tanks for the help!

Looks fake to me...the cracking is too pronounced for one thing. I'd never buy a spider dial anyway...its just a production defect, nothing else.

I always thought this one of the most dubious, misleading, and trying-to-justify something about Rolexes: Giving a cool name to a damaged dial.

I don't think I'll ever "get" the overly distressed dial thing, spider, mosaic, etc.

I could live with an original dial that has faded or lost the luminescence but these dials that in some cases you can't even read don't appeal to me at all, and to pay multiples of what a good dial sells for is nuts in my mind.

This. Although a purple-blue dial is supercool.
Or a tropical dial

I would never buy a "spider" dial either. Paying a premium for a defective dial does not make sense to me. The particular one that you asked us about looks awful to me. It looks like somebody scratched the dial with a Stanley knife or something similar.

Spider & Stardust are just other names for damaged dials.

I guess it would be better, more efficient and all, if people would just answer a question with the facts and be done with it.

Facts are useful... But offering an opinion on something that's not been asked is a waste of everyones time..,

This is a question I can answer, it's all about taste.

Yes total rubbish
look at the letter s in comparison to genuine dials
the top and bottom of the letter should be flat not rounded.
the quickest test for me

Opinions on Spider Dials were, I suspect, included for the OP in case he was under the false impression that they are somehow special or desirable (as sellers often claim them to be).

spider dials ( in terms of 80's watches) are just what they are , I'm not aware of any serious dealer who has ever asked a premium for such a thing , nor do they command a discount ( whereas in 60's watches they do)...some people like the effect and it can look quite cool and unlike 60's watches it rarely seems to lead to actual damage or bits coming off the dial so if you like it theres no harm.

I think the crazed 80s dials can look quite cool, but I doubt I'd buy one. I agree that I don't think dealers try to get more for them, but simply 'market' them as they are, using the colourful terms and nick-names which a lot of other people also use. It's not something you can overlook, after all.

As for pineapple on pizza - well, the whole concept of pizza seems to suggest that you can pretty much put anything on one and stick it in the oven. I don't mind, really, but I draw the line at chicken, for some reason. But ham and pepperoni are seemingly okay... WTF.

The lettering on this dial looks different than other examples of genuine dials I've seen. Specifically with regard to the spidering effect - a genuine dial, which has "genuinely" spidered, will be exceptionally subtle. When looking at it head-on, in fact, you most likely will not notice it. The spidering will be apparent when viewing the dial obliquely, when it is lit, but otherwise it will look ordinary. This is overdone.
