Explorer 2 and DJ2
So over the past couple years, Rolex has "pulled back" size-wise on both the Seadweller and the Day-Date II.
Do you think they're going to likewise pull back on the size of the Explorer II and Datejust II in future years? I've always like both those models, but have always held back on pulling the trigger in both cases b/c I felt they're were just slightly too awkward size-wise. |

On the EXP, I don't think so. I believe Rolex intentionally carved out a niche different from the GMT and sub lines. And I think that was a master stroke.
The DJ is a different story...historically the DD and DJ case size has been tied at the hip. So we are going to have to wait until next year to see if the DJ will follow suit from the DD40. I think there's at least an outside chance, maybe better it will. |

I have DJ 2 and smaller wrists for a guy but I think it's the perfect size. The way I see it is I'm young (30) and if I'm spending the $$ I don't want to be discreet about it. I see old men with their smaller watches and it looks out of style to me.

You could argue that in fact they increased the size of the SD, as the old model was ~39mm (Rolex rounded-up the size, as they have done for other models). If you are referring to the Deepsea then this is a different model and of course still in production.
Making the 216570 42mm gave the Explorer II a new and successful lease on life, and helped it reclaim its own identity.

Pulled back?
Don't agree. They're just filling holes in the line up to give people choice. As a consumer, that's only good news. |

I've had an ExpII for a few months now. I wish it was 40mm, but I don't think they will downsize this one.
If they did I'd swap them out.

The 16570 was the same size as the Sub/GMT so it needed to be different to grab more sales. I had a 216570, and at 42mm it was a nice fit on a smaller wrist like mine. The flatter caseback made it sit really well on the wrist as well.
I can see the DJ2 going away in favor of a DJ 40mm. It will take a couple of years before we see the entire lineup, but if we see a TT DJ 40mm next year you can pretty much bet your bottom dollar the SS will go 40mm as well. |

I think the DJII will be replaced with a DJ40 next year or the year after. The exp 2 I would love them to do it in 40mm. To me the 42mm is a pretty huge watch. It wears like a 44mm or 45mm. I have owned 2 of them and both got sold quick and replaced with the old model. However the old model was never that popular. Hence why you can still find them NOS. The 42mm made it desirable for those wanting a big watch and carved out its own niche. It would be nice if they kept it going but did a smaller version in 40mm. They do different sizes with the YM so it's possible but not likely.
