The aka "Hulk" and "Batman" where and who's idea?
Not sure but I will not be surprised if those rolex aka's where originated here at the TRF. Some members will not agree having aliases but guess what it's more fun and adds a bit of character for the watch. I think we should recognize those name makers because the whole world has been using it even at magazines and google.

The (modern forum driven) nicknames are distasteful

Seriously?
"distasteful" ?
Why is that exactly please. They're just nicknames, most nicknames are fun, so explain how HULK and BATMAN are distasteful. Not acceptable: "I just picked up a HULK" Acceptable "I just purchased a Rolex Submariner 116610 LV 40mm, featuring green bezel". Really? |

A person should be able to reference their watch by nickname if they choose to and not worry that their use of the nickname is distasteful.

[QUOTE=Eric Chan;5753457]You do pose an interesting question. Personally, I am not a fan of nicknames (old and new) and thus choose not to use them. However, I am not against someone using nicknames to describe a watch and to call modern forum nicknames distasteful is a little much. Why are old nicknames (Pepsi, Coke, Root Beer, etc.) acceptable?
b/c they go with booze. i wanted to name the Hulk the Peyote but it didn't catch on... |

It's not the nicknames I oppose, it's the bad nicknames.
The Hulk works imho. Bruiser and Batman do not. I think people were reaching when they come up with them. Smurf and Hulk came naturally but I think bruiser and batman were nicknames for the sake of coming up with nicknames. |

Pepsi and Coke do not describe the whole watch, though, just the bezel (or just the insert if you want to strip it right down).

And Batman? Is this nickname not referring to the blue and black colour of the bezel?

Nicknames might be fun to some, I just think a lot of us find them childish. They are just watches, things. Not girlfriends. They don't need a nickname. If people want to invent some made up code names for watches that's their perogative. Since we get so many questions both ridiculous and technical about Rolex watches on this forum, you'd think we'd call the models what Rolex calls them: by model name or number.
