Fixed lugs

Hey guys,

I really like the military submariner but I'm not a fan of the fixed lugs. I'm not planning on re selling so will it be okay for me to remove my fixed lugs? Thanks

Logic would tell me that no matter your intentions, I would not destroy one of the defining characteristics of such a valuable piece.

one of the main reasons people love Milsubs is because of fixed lugs, and there aren't any lugholes on milsubs because of the fixed bars. they were made to be worn on nato straps. and cutting off the bars would significantly devalue the watch. especially since it would essentially destroy the midcase. tossing it on a steel band would require putting in lug holes or drilling out the case to fit spring bars in. there's plenty of Civilian subs out there that would suit your purpose just fine and at a much smaller price point.

I'd also recommend being a bit more civil, If you feel someone has made a personal attack on you here, report the post. calling someone a jackass isn't a way to handle your problems here.

I've seen plenty of people modify their watches. I'm not a huge fan of NATO straps and would like the option of swapping the straps and tossing it on a steel band.

I like the watch very much. I'm a big fan of military watches, but I hate having to compromise with the fixed lugs. Anyhow, thank you so much for your input guys.

It's entirely up to you, of course - especially if you don't intend to sell. I wouldn't. It's one of the things that makes it a MilSub, but many have been civilianised, so it's not a huge deal. After all, we're talking lugs/spring-bars on a watch here, not finding life on another planet.

You're welcome - if you do buy one, and decide to have it done - obviously take it to someone who knows what's in their hands, and appreciates what it is, and can do a decent and sympathetic job when drilling out the bars. I don't think it's too demanding for a proper craftsman/jeweller/watchmaker.

Actually it's not a difficult task at all. When I purchased my lemania from a helicopter pilot, it too had fixed lugs. I wedged a flat head in between the lug and the miscase and the bar popped right out. I love changing up the straps on that piece.

actually, i think using a flat head on a millsub would work too; in fact, the lugz would prob pop out even easier than on the lemania of urs... please let us know how easily the lugz pop out...

I wish I had more money that brains. If you aren't selling it and the value hit to you is inconsequential, I say do it. I honestly would consider modifying a $5000 watch so why not a watch that's more expensive if your budget allows it.

To some people here, they might consider you actions destroying a piece of history....but to me, the history of the watch won't change and each nick or mod you do adds to the story/milestone of the timepiece, in this case, customizing something that's yours that makes it more special to you. There are many historical pieces that have been modified to suite the owners needs. I'm just really glad you plan to use it than to put her in a safe for the next 30 years.

All that said, if you decide to do that, please preserve (do not damage) the lugs and bars as much as you can. There are ways you can reverse this modification should you back track on the decision.

Obviously, you can't change what people say about you, you can change how you respond to others accusations though, I never defended Nocrown, his claim was uncalled for but not completely unsubstantiated. I know he wasn't the only one with the thought to pop into his mind, sometimes things are just better left unsaid.

from a financial standpoint it's pretty clear cut that this is a really stupid idea. and it really makes no sense as to why he needs a Milsub if he just wants to throw a bracelet on it. there's plenty of 5513's in the world, and if he cared about the history of the watch, he wouldn't be chopping the fixed bars off.
like the old saying goes, a fool and his money are soon parted. he opened himself up to that comment when he posted this question. it doesn't even pass the common sense test. how anyone would think physically cutting off any part of a Rolex is beyond me, much less as rare of a reference as a Milsub
