About to Buy DSSD - Need Clarification! Glidelock & Divers Ext
Hello,
I have searched & searched for days - and this is driving me crazy!! I would like some clarification please! I know exactly WHAT each item is and where it is (Glidelock in clasp, Divers Extension closest to clasp on 12oclock side of watch)! However, I'm extremely confused about the purpose of each? It seems to me they are two items, with exactly the same function, for exactly the same purpose! How incredibly odd!!! Why not one OR the other, Rolex? About the Divers Extension, from my knowledge: I always was under the impression that the folding Divers Extension, which some people remove & replace with one or two links instead - served the purpose of allowing you to make the bracelet larger, and slip it on over your wetsuit, on the fly? No tools are needed to "open" the Divers Extension, it can be done on the fly (i.e. before you dive) and "reset" or adjusted back to "normal/everyday" (i.e. CLOSED position) after you are finished diving. In essence, a VERY easy way to slip the watch over your wet suit, then return it to the EXACT size/bracelet condition as before your days' adventure. However, as I said, I am now VERY confused! Here is some material taken directly from the Rolex website. About the Glidelock: Rolex Glidelock extension system Feature of the Rolex Deepsea The patented Rolex Glidelock extension system allows divers to adjust the length of the bracelet for a secure and comfortable fit over a diving suit, without using any tools. A robust toothed panel under the clasp cover provides an extension of up to 20 mm in 2 mm increments. Rolex Glidelock ro • lex • glide • lock An exclusive, easy-to-operate bracelet extension system for divers’ watches, patented by Rolex.Enables a fine adjustment of the bracelet of up to 20 mm in 2 mm increments, without the aid of tools.Allows the watch to be worn over a 3 mm diving suit.Seamlessly integrated into the clasp to combine reliability, aesthetics and comfort.Designed for professionals, useful for all.The Rolex Way. Aren't those the EXACT same functions/features/benefits of the Divers Extension??????? So what am I missing here? Source: http://www.rolex.com/watches/rolex-d...x-deepsea.html Thanks in advance for your patience, understanding, help, and knowledge! |

The glide lock allows for micro adjustments. The divers extension is for extending the bracelet to accomodate a wet suit.

There are dive suits and then there are dive suits..
Warm water suits are one size (usually 3mm) and cold water suits (for deeper diving too) are thicker.. The Sea Dweller has always had a method of fitting over either the thin suits or the thick suits. The old SD had a long link that could be fitted in place of the standard link but required tools, and that link, to be changed, the Sub did not. It remains the same. The Sub has a Glidelock that can be expanded to fit over the thin suits via the 20 notch bracelet extension. The DSSD has the additional Glidelock extension system that can be used to fit over the thicker suits via the extra extension and then comfortably fitted using the 20 click clasp. Technology changes, the function remains the same..

The other point to mindful of is that many owners remove the dive extension to achieve a better fit.

Glide lock: when you get fat, adjust the bracelet with it.
Diver extension: when you get really fat....

The Glidelock is the clasp that offers micro adjustments, even while wearing the watch. Can be used to extend if your wrist swells or shrinks depending on temps, but also can be used to fit over a thin warm water dive suit.
The Glivelock Divers Extension is a separate piece from the clasp that folds away. It normally rest folded and tucked away and acts like a normal link but can fold out to add more length to be used for a traditional diving suit, gloves or something worn for cold waters. Let me see if I can post some pics up..... |

Here's the Glidelock clasp...
First picture. Second Picture is our very own Puffy's pics in a thread on this subject. What he is holding in between his fingers is the divers extension, nice and folded away. Third Picture shows the Glidelock clasp and divers extension together. Glidelock clasp on the left and the extension system on the right, which is folded and slides under the clasps depending on your adjustment. |

For comparison, here's a Submariner's Glidelock on the left and a Deepsea's on the right.
Same name, different functions. The Submariner does not come with a divers extension system, only the Glidelock fine adjustment mechanism which differs and must be adjusted while off the wrist. It is adjusted from the underside of the clasp while the Deepsea is adjusted from the top. Both are in my opinion the best clasps on the market, particularly the Deepsea's. (Got the pics from this forum somewhere, hope the OPs don't mind.) |

Here's the review I did on the Dssd and the SubC and in there you can see the different in the mechanism of the clasps though both are being called the same, Glidelock. And you can see that both have the flip lock. http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=374607 Advance congrats on your Dssd. Its an awesome piece of engineering. |

They both do. You can clearly see the flip lock in the open position on the Deep Sea on the right in the first picture Rashid posted. The old bracelet was called the Fliplock bracelet but the new Glidelock bracelet still has the mechanism.
