Icon17 How is your Rolex insured?

Just got my first Rolex, pre-owned DJ 1603, went to add it to my home owners insurance and it was going to be about $10.00 per month. What do others do, are their any other options, watch insurance companies?

Thanks for the help!

Get a personal articles policy. It is separate from your homeowners and covers theft, loss and damage. You should be able to get it through the same company as your homeowners

Jewelers Mutual. Adding your watches to your home owners is not recommended.

Jewelers Mutual is very affordable and exclusive to jewelry, I pay $140/year and I have two different watches insured against a $0 deductible.

Homeowners insurance limits the amount they pay regardless of the value of the watch and if you file a claim for damage/loss of the watch the whole premium goes up, so basically you screw your own homeowner's policy for an event that maybe didn't even happened at your home.

There was a thread here not long ago, someone had a break in, and among other things the scumbags stole his watch, I think an SD but don't remember the exact model. The insurance company was paying $500 for it.

In the above story, the problem was not that he used his homeowners insurance. The problem was he had lousy homeowners insurance.

You are making pretty large assumptions here.

Every homeowners policy is different, as are the potential "add-on" features available to each policy, i.e., limits and such.

Wouldn't a JM policy go up just the same after a substantial claim?

Nonetheless, I have a Traveler's homeowners policy with an add-on "valuable items" coverage. I choose how much coverage I want with this feature.

I actually made a claim after dropping a watch and the full movement service was covered because accidental damage is covered under the valuable items feature. I also have no deductible.

Try not making such broad statements next time; they are misleading.

What's misleading? What I wrote actually happened.

Of course a JM premium will go up after a claim, but it's not the same to have an increase on a $140/year policy than on a $1000.

Why not? If each piece is identified, appraised value is provided and then individually endorsed on to the HO policy, why not?

As mentioned... and it may be semantics, when many say 'added to home owner's policy' most actually mean adding a Personal Articles Policy (any descent insurance agent/broker should inform their clients on the details when asked about insuring watches/jewelry), which is distinctly separate from the Home Owner's policy.

... so not sure why it is not recommended?

I have a personal property policy with USAA. For $30k in coverage for all my watches, runs me about $30/month.

Not sure of how a claim will affect your premiums, but if specifically endorsed on to your HO policy, your watches, along with any other scheduled jewelry, is fully covered for the scheduled amount.

Under the basic Homeowner's policy, there is very little coverage for non scheduled pieces, otherwise everyone would claim they had the Hope Diamond or a Faberge Egg in their sock drawer. In the thread you cited the homeowner could not have scheduled the individual pieces that were stolen.

Mine is on house insurance. I have to declare seperately any items >£5k ie watches.

This covers me out of the house / accidents etc but am fully insured and watch would be fully covered / replaced.

I'm sure there are good and bad policies.

I added my $8.5K BLNR to my Auto-Owners home insurance [personal articles policy - appraisal of watch, etc...] a couple months ago and my annual rate increased $47.06... with a $1K deductible.

Different people have different philosophies about insurance. For me, paying the $1K deductible would completely suck, but I can afford it... take that across everything I insure and the rate deduction by having a $1K deductible is significant annually (and more than paid for itself over time). I use insurance to cover what I cannot afford to lose/replace with the spare money I have sitting in the bank on a monthly basis.

Others see insurance like they see 'Cadillac Health Insurance policies'... cover everything whether the individual can afford it or not. While this is a 'feel good' when claims are made it really is not efficient or practical in many regards... but to each their own.

USAA is fantastic if you can get a policy.
