GMT AD or Ebay?

I am a new member of RF, and I am thinking of getting a New GMT Master 2, 116710LN. My dilemma and questions are, new at AD it runs about $8450.00. There is one on Ebay new from 2014 unworn for $7400 make offer, with no tax and free shipping. So first question, does a watch that sits around affect the movement? Where would such a watch come from? I know it can be a million places, but seems strange to still be unworn or not sold. Second question, when the sales page states it comes with warranty card, my understanding is that it doesn't matter, since the watch is not sold at an AD, original warrantee is void. So then, warrantee card is just for show?

For about $1400 off from full retail, would this purchase be worth it? The eBay seller has 100% positive feedback and supposedly covered by eBay/Paypal buy back guarantee? Here is the eBay link:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rolex-GMT-Ma...item25a6185a6f

Thanks for your suggestions.

I agree with omitohud your seller on ebay has little feedback for such am exspencive purchase. It is the one feedback in a year. You should be able to find one close to that price with better references on TRF.

I was in the same delemia with my GMT 2c. I ended up paying extra buying from an AD for the peace of mind. There's just too many fakes out there. Plus my GMT was my first Rolex so I wanted to be the first owner. I prob overpaid, but I sleep better at night. I know there are plenty out there who will disagree.

eBay can be safe and I've used them to help resolve issues. It isn't easy however. One time I bought a Rolex that died with in the first hours of use. They gave me five days to get a repair estimate. I bailed on their help and instead turned if over to Amex who were appreciably more helpful. Using ebay one can have three layers of protection. 1) eBay, 2) PayPal, and 3) credit card company. All three have worked for me to deal with deadbeats and there are plenty. If you don't want hassle in your life, do what others have suggested and use trusted sellers on this forum. Research the sellers through the feedback sub forum.

As others have said, buy from a trusted seller here. They have a long standing track record and have this entire forum to answer to. I, personally, would be uncomfortable making such a large purchase on eBay.

No if it were me. The risk is not worth the discount imho.

Why not talk to DavidSW (a trusted seller here) about this one:

http://davidsw.com/product/rolex-116...ramic-bezel-2/

I bought an Omega SMPc from him in excellent condition and it looked basically like new. It also had a warranty on it. He often gets watches that are new and unworn, so you can keep an eye on the website or contact him to see if he can get one for you.

MUCH safer than EBay.

I would use a trusted seller off here rather than eBay. Look at the who's who section and several names will pop up over and over.

Spend a few hundred more and go the trusted seller route, no hassle, no worries. If the price difference between AD and trusted seller is marginal than shop at the AD.

Honestly, using the trusted sellers here is like the secret most people outside of this forum don't know. I've done four transactions with trusted sellers and all were great. Why anyone in the market for a Rolex doesn't shop here for pre-owned (and sometimes BNIB) is beyond me.

Don't use ebay, even if you know what the CHS is it's usually not worth the hassle, research trusted sellers here instead.

Warranty is valid for two years if it has an AD's stamp on it, doesn't matter if it is resold after that.

Is saving $1000 worth the risk of getting ripped off and losing $7400?

You can get great, fair deals from many people that post in the classified here at TRF. I'd avoid eBay.

Ok thanks for the responses, I'll certainly look at the sellers here. But, you do understand that I am new to this forum, so there is tons to read and research on here. I have to say, and I don't want to disrespect, that a group of guys telling me to buy here and to trust them is also a red flag in the eyes of a newbie? Not saying not not to, but just another outlet to research. This may sound naive to many on here but one must be sure of all sources when shelling out thousands. So off to the sellers section I go :)

I had the same sentiment when I was debating whether to buy from a trusted seller on TRF or my AD. After discussing with the wife, she was more comfortable going the AD route. Hindsight being 20-20, I would've gone with DavidSW. If this is your first Rolex and you are not as familiar with them, it is not worth the risk to buy on eBay from a low selling seller. Best of luck with your decision and post pics when you get the GMT IIc.

If you don't trust the well respected members of the forum then why did you make the post? Members that have been on this site for 10 + years with thousands of posts probably wouldn't still be members if they were dishonest. This site is moderated heavily. And I'm not trying to be callous, good luck with your purchase. I too recommend using one of the trusted sellers because of personal experience.

Thanks again, guys :)
So i was checking out the GMT on DavidSW, It looks good, both V and G dates. But I'm still unclear on the warranty card thing, if not purchased from an AD, then what does the warranty card do? Can I take it to an AD and have warranty work done? Also, since an AD purchased Rolex has a 2 year warranty, how does a 2010 for example have a warranty card?
Sorry for the questions that seem gingerbread to you guys :)

Rolex/RSC do the warranty work, not an AD, they just send it on to them, which you can do yourself. Rolex warranty is valid for 2 years only, after that you have to pay. Research this here, tons of info.

@socal59!

I'm also in search of a gmtII and it would be my second rolex. I've also looked on eBay. I'm so scetch on buying anything online like you might be. There's alot of people on here who have sold alot of watches so keep doing some research. There's a local jewlery store in San Francisco I might buy my watch from next week but there's better prices on here. So I'm as equally as lost lol But! If I had to buy either from eBay or here I would buy from this site. Sometimes there's people in LA that post here that would meet you.
