The one and only watch is an urban legend

I had an epiphany over the weekend and wanted to share with everybody here.

I see in some posts where the person wants to buy or has just bought a Rolex. He liked it so much and planned on having that to be the one and only watch or his everyday watch from that point on. I always thought "Yeah, right".

I was looking at my watch box over the weekend and I remembered for every watch in there, I was planning for it to be the "perfect everyday watch" or "my designated office watch", or even " the perfect weekend watch" when I was justifying the purchase at that time.

Apparently all those plans fell apart and I bought more and more watches. Some higher ends and some cheap plasticky ones.

Recently, I got a SD4k and thought that is my "go out watch" and told myself no more buying this year. Then I saw this Tudor Chrono Blue and I told myself I must have this watch for everyday wear in the office.

So it darn on me that watch buying is really in our male DNA. It is our modern day hunter instinct. We don't hunt for food anymore but the instinct is still there. We look for our prey ( in this case watches), stalk it ( find it on line or at AD), plan the kill ( get the $ ready, negotiate), and then go for the kill and bring it home ( buy it).

After the kill, our instinct tells us to go out and look for another hunt. So in my view the one and only watch is just an urban legend

Urban legend, myth, for sure here, but for each rule an exception. I began to interest myself to mecanical watches when my little Seiko quartz chronograph, worn during 15 years, fell hardly on the ground, completly broken.

My first :



A second one because I was tired of the speed for many reasons :



But I finished to be tired of sub too for one reason. I have to say that I still love these two watches, pictures or worn by other people, but no more on my wrist.

So I sold them to buy this one in December 2013 :



Perfect for me now. OK, maybe I'll be tired of it one day : so it will be sold to buy another one.

I'm sure it's possible to become a "one watch guy" with a 16710 with all inserts, oyster, jubilee and a few natos. This watch is a true Swiss army knife: 3 timezone, date, timer.
If you are not a regular diver (which i'm not, only dove once in Guam 10 years ago), what else could you possibly need ?
Sure i'd love to have a Daytona or DD but it's just gluttony.

i had a 36 mm 16030 blk dial datejust on jubilee as a one and only for many years ( nearly 20 years ) and even after winning a brietling colt auto in a contest i really only wore the DJ , until i set my sights on a true lifetime one and only in march 2015 , a 16610 x serial with nice patina and the durability of the sapphire crystal etc

i loved that watch and was content ............................... but i found TRF around that same time .

since mid march , i have bought
1.SUB 16610 X serial
2.Exp II 16570 polar t serial
3.Exp I 114270 D serial
4.Fat lady coke GMT 16760 8.4 mill serial
5.SUB 16610 S serial

i sold

1.Datejust 16030 9 mill serial

so i am down to again having 2 watches like i was before this whole debacle but they are now the 16610 S serial and the Fat lady GMT , and i am again thinking i am good for a bit and i am now officially a 2 watch guy LOL i figure the GMT has so much versatility having 3 or 4 bezel inserts and oyster or jubilee bracelet options and of course unlimited NATO options as well as 2 piece leather straps and of course the sub is as nice on NATO as it is on bracelet ! so until i really need a dress watch which is not likely since i rarely ever dress up i think i am good for now !

You see, our minds work in a very funny way. just because you made that statement, I can predict you will be buying a dress watch in the very near future.

no way , not a chance , never gonna happen , unless i find another DJ like the one i had since i regretted letting it go almost right away ! or maybe an explorer 1 since the 36mm one i had was cool and i probably would have kept it if i didn't have to replace the sub i got rid of for the GMT ! ok , maybe your right ! !

This is so funny. Only a month ago I bought my one and only every occasion watch. No need to ever look at another watch again! This week I'm trying on a different one. ( Although some might think not that different.) I'm not going to buy a third or perhaps a fourth am I?

"One and only" is definitely a myth. How much of us stood on the same watch? Some stay on one at a time, but not for one over time.

I just sold my blue dial Tag Aquaracer and have three watches only now. Two of them Rolex. The day I bought the Tag , 18 months ago, I remember deleting all my "watched items" watches on my eBay because I thought "this watch hunting just had to stop" and the Tag was all I'd ever want.
I'm on the "hunt" for a Bluesy C now.
It's a hobby really ,isn't it?
Dr Tom ,in a recent post, said that when he got his Platona it "stopped the hunt."
I am hoping the 116613 will do that for me.

I cannot say just how much I completely agree with your assessment, and being a dedicated hunter I totally agree with your analogy. With me in the last several years I have had several different addictions where I buy, sell, trade and eventually get what I should have just bought in the first place. It has gone from watches to automobiles to guns/scopes/silencers/thermal night vision and now back to watches. The cycle never seems to end for me....it's a good thing I have a job that can support my expensive habits!
