It occurred to me that having a lot of fake Rolexes out there may, in fact, be a good thing, as they help keep the value of real ones up. Could there be a "genuine premium" implicitly built into the price of ours.

Of course, the downside is that a potential buyer incurs higher search costs, etc., to find real vs. fake.

I fail to see the logic on your statement.
Regardless of whether the legit counterpart appreciates or depreciates due to fake copies out there, that's the least of the problems (maybe the trademark owners will disagree with me here), but the proceeds from the counterfeit industry are used to fund terrorism and far more sinister enterprises.

So no, having a lot of fake Rolexes or fake anythings is not good for anyone, no matter how you see it.

Rolex and other manufacturers spend enormous amounts of money fighting counterfeiters.

That's money they could put into the products or just help keep the prices a bit lower by not having to spend that money in the first place.

In the long run, it is we the consumers who foot the bill for the organized criminals who counterfeit consumer goods.

Counterfeiting is an organized criminal enterprise, regardless of where the money ultimately winds up.
