The DD40 wears smaller and is dressier.

While the platona wears larger and is more casual sporty.

That's it.

Having seen the dial I'd go for the DD40.

DD40 simply because it's the most classic of platinum Rolexes. Plus that new movement seems pretty awesome!

Comparing a dress watch with a sports model is like comparing apples and oranges. Not a Day Date person, so Daytona for me.

Platona! I love the DD40 and it's next on my list, but in WG. With a DD I really like the fluted bezel. To me it's part of the watche's character. Platinum DD40 without fluted bezel leaves something missing for me... All that said it's still and outstanding watch.

DD40 for me. The movement alone sets it apart
I also prefer simpler dial configurations so for that reason alone, I've never been a fan of chronographs. The Daytona is an awesome piece to be sure, but just not for me.

Hmm...dead heat right now in the poll. I will go with the Daytona as I'm more drawn to the sportier models.

I just don't like Daytona and prefer a chunkier Chronometer So DD would be my choice of those..

Would be interesting to see the dial for real or at least close up - not sure about readability

It kind of looks like an AP dial but tilted 45 degrees I wonder if it has the same 3D affect

Platona. I recently weighed these options and chose the Platona. It was not an easy choice because both are beautiful and iconic. It came down to the fact that I'm more of a "sports" watch guy, and I love the Oyster bracelet more than any other. I thought I would need a date, but I don't miss it at all (phew!). You can't go wrong with either, though. Try both of them on --- one will speak to you more, and listen to it!

The platona is kinda common. My AD is part of a chain of about eight branches. They routinely have ten platonas in stock. I've often seen an AD with a platona in the window and another on display inside too. For something that would appear to be so aspirational, you'd expect it to have a certain rarity to it.

The platona with diamond markers on the other hand is far harder to find.

Just because dealers display them all the time, doesn't mean they sold a lot of them. CMIIW an AD doesn't have much say about what Rolex will ship them - if that is the case, they will simply order only the popular models. The fact that the platona is on display all the time, may in fact indicate that they didn't sell too many of them.

That is the norm with PM models, you see more of them on display rather than, say, batman, hulk, or SS daytona.

True, but discussions with my AD and half a dozen other ADs I visited in the last month suggested that they do indeed sell pretty regularly. This recurring theme of easy availability was the reason I ultimately decided against a platona. Think about it: a dealer could sell ten DDs all with different combinations of dial, bracelet, bezel and so on. If he sells ten platonas, they're all the same. Well, one in ten might have the diamond dial - on here and on any google search you can see it seems far less popular.

True, but an AD can refuse any of the models it's offered. It wouldn't make any financial sense to hold half a million's worth of stock in all the same model if it's not gonna sell.
