Sorry Local Rolex Dealer rant

Just checking to see if you all think I'm crazy or not regarding my local Rolex dealer.
After buying a Rolex Deepsea earlier this year, and being treated somewhat rudely by the Manager then, I returned to buy another one, a Deepblue, and they got one in last week. They asked me to put $500 on a credit card to hold it, I did that. This was late on Wednesday last week, and I asked my Salesperson which day he worked, Sunday, or this Wednesday, because these were the two days I could pick it up. I was told he didn't work Sunday, but he worked Wednesday.
I get a call today saying they want me to pay for this watch by Wednesday, or they will sell it to the "three people waiting for one"....
I explained my plan was to come in Wednesday to pay for it and pick it up.
He was apologetic for making the call, suggesting the Manager was pushing him to get me to come in and pick it up.
If I had the time to call around and secure another DBlue, I would tell them to go ahead and sell the watch to one of the next three lucky clients, and wash my hands of them for good. But I would have to drive around the city of Chicago, and I do not have the time for that, and being a local businessman, I like trying to spend my money in my community when possible. Frustrating to feel like this when buying such a wonderful watch. It should be a great experience, not a drag.

Thats a bit rude of them given that you paid $500 deposit. However, the key question that I know all TRF members will be thinking of is: Did they serve your Diet Coke in a glass?

Get the watch as planned.
Just try to put the negative experience behind you.
Hope that the interaction with the dealer at service time is more supportive and positive, or find another solution for servicing.

I have had my MK II DSSD since Oct 2011 and I am slowly moving up the list for the JC DSSD. In contrast my dealer is great in every respect.

Good luck.

It's up to you, but a phone call like that would not bother me at all. It's just business.

I agree and not only that, but $500 is pretty cheap to hold a watch of that value.

Not really. It's what they asked him to do.

My take is that it's rude. The OP said he would be in wednesday. The call was unnecessary. If he did not come in, I'm sure they would have no trouble selling it to somebody else.

Customer service is part of the luxury experience, imo. And that was pretty classless.

Btw, I've never been much of fan of Mercedes, but the new AMG GT-S...holy cow, what a beauty!!

Yes, it truly is. The SOUND of the exhaust note is...awesome! Great car, just very limited, so we see only one or two every couple months.

Yea, sorry. There is no way I would have bought this. I would have called them on it and told them to go ahead and sell it and refund my $500.

Then called David. Well actually I would have called David first and avoided all of this.

Bingo! i was asked to put 1/2 down for mine...and i called around the entire US looking for one in stock.. Nada....and guess what? I put 1/2 down and await one to show up to the AD...It's just what we're dealing with on this particular watch...Most places i called, have at least a waiting list of 5 or more who are on standby to buy them. You can't argue with supply and demand...But i agree it may not feel very pleasant, but i understand why they are asking for payment...Deals fall through from time to time...But would've been nice for them to treat you a little better. Either way, i would still buy the watch...Just rethink the AD next time you are in the market...good luck and i look forward to seeing some pics. ;-)

Was the deposit non-refundable? If so the AD had nothing to worry about.

Since they already had your credit card info on record I guess, with your permission, they could have finalized the sale and you could have picked up the watch at your leisure. There really was no need for their strong armed tactics. If you ever are looking to buy another watch I would certainly look for another AD.

Not crazy, but not the best move to keep giving them your business either! Clearly, they have something you want, and apparently no one else has it, and they have three other people waiting to buy it if you don't. They're treating it as a business transaction and not really looking to "build a relationship" with you. IMO, you're voting with your $ (not once, but twice) and telling them you don't mind being treated a certain way.

My wife said the same thing, get the watch.
I guess I am insulted only because I sell Mercedes-Benz, and we have earned top surveys from our clients for years. I pride myself in helping clients feel like the had a luxury experience when buying from us.
I don't expect a hug and kiss, but could it be that hard to have a little class selling me a Rolex?

Kudos to you for how you treat your customers. As for buying a Rolex, judging by recent "AD experience" posts, the watch is the classiest part of the transaction.

I wouldn't really be too bothered about the call for the watch. I assume it was the manager pushing it a little because he probably has other sales reps or customers wanting to buy the watch immediately and he himself is being pressured.

It happens across every brand. I've washed my hands of Mercedes-Benz for life after some extremely poor and dishonest treatment. Not from your dealership, of course.

It's a hot watch and they are just trying to make the sale. There must be hundreds of sales that fall through so they just want to close. Not a biggie in my opinion. Best.
