electric car question

Fellas (and ladies of course), living and working in London, I'm seriously considering getting a Nissan Leaf. After borrowing one for a few days I have to say it's amazing. No tax, no congestion charge (£10 per day) and free charging in the car park. On a full charge, I can get at least 2 return journeys. My only concern is at home where the charging cable won't reach from the house. I've been told I can get an extension cable (high amp) measured and extend the 6 meter cable. The question is will this work or is 6 meters the optimum length? Thanks in advance

I would think it can be done, I have worked in construction for quite some time and there are instances when we need to run high amp extension cords throughout job sites for heavy duty grinders etc.

I would call the dealership though they should know if there is one out there hell they might even stock it for situations like this.

The 3.3kW on-board charger is capable of drawing a maximum of 15 amps only so a cable extension will be fine. But if you have the upgraded 6.6kW on-board charger, then you would have to have a electrician put in a dedicated circuit for the charge plug in only.

thanks so much for a great answer. I believe it is the upgraded charger as it's the top of the range model. The dealer says it's ok, but I want to be sure!

Ok finally got the dealer to speak plainly and clearly!!! It does have the 3.3kw charger and by matching the cable with that supplied, there is no reason not to extend it. Thanks for your help and now back to Rolex........!

Why not a Tesla? You should at least test drive one before laying down the coin for a Leaf.

:-)

Had one for a few days. It's brilliant. It's costing less than I'm paying in congestion charge.

Leaf is maybe 1/3 the price of a Tesla, that's enough to keep me from purchasing one. We ended up with a Volt and we use a 12 gauge extension cord on ours regularly, draws 12 amps max on 110v. Resale value on all these cars is horrible buuuuuuut the cost of ownership for us over the last 2 years has already equaled what we lose in residual value.

But does the volt have "Ludicous Mode"?

I had an electric car once. I could only drive it 20 yards before the cable came out of the wall

Seriously though, if I was going electric I'd be looking at the Vauxhall Ampera. It looks like a proper car for a start and has a decent range of over 350 miles. Ok, it's more hybrid than total electric but it seems to be a much more practical balance. Over 200mpg too, but it is eye-wateringly expensive.

I'd feel like Noddy driving that Leaf.

I have a Fiat 500e and I am loving owning an EV

In the owner's manual, it said don't use an extension cord for the 110v outlet level 1 charger, which can only charge the car up from empty to fill in over 20 hr.

But I use a 10 gauge 6' extension cord with it from time to time. The cord is a little warm after around 3 to 4 hr of charging. its nothing alarming, but its definitely a little warmer.

I just try to keep the extension short but keep it useful.
