Seiko 5 has 21 jewels, automatic movement, and costs $62??

This is hard to beat, let's face it, from a value perspective.

In the fine print it turns out it's -20 / +40, which 'aint great, but $62?

BOUGHT.

And the vast majority of them will operate well inside the specified differential.
It's typical Seiko policy to quote worst case scenario, only to deliver better performance in actuality.

I'm seriously considering a SRP633 right now...

Seiko takes a lot of engineering and mass produced it. I've always respected them but never owned one. The new "pro spex" look good. Plus day and date on a diver- other than Seiko not seen since the 70's of so. Plus the '633 is all black and mean looking.

I own several seiko's and it is to bad that for the most part they are well under valued especially there higher end watches like the Grand and Credor . Great value on so many levels. It really is all about the name . That is our society .

I have been close on several occasions on picking one up, but always have to tell myself a I have like 8 other cheap watches that don't get any wrist time as it is. Still always tempted to pick one up just for the heck of it.

Always loved Seiko 5's. I paid more for the straps than the watches. Rugged, keeps good time, day/date, nice lume and good looking dial. Mine have been dunked, painted and dropped. At $50 I admire and wonder how Seiko makes a profit on these. Fun watches!

I also bought one for my 8 year old son (to replace the vintage Seiko he lost in the surf when swimming last summer, ouch). Anyway, I put it on a Nato and Zac loved it. He loved the display caseback and the smaller size 37mm case is perfect for small wrists.

Unfortunately it started to gain time after a couple of months, up to 40 min day, then one day suddenly stopped. Something has come loose inside and rattles around like a bolt in a soup can. I contacted Amazon, and to their credit they were happy to exchange, but would only cover postage within USA (which is fair enough). The postage from Australia to USA and back is more than the watch, so not worth the exercise.

I was going to replace with same again, but now thinking I should get something that is waterproof enough to go swimming, so he can use throughout the coming summer. Very hard to find suitable watch in a smaller case size.

All "kids" watches are just junk usually licensed for a superhero or cartoon or some rubbish. Seems the only other choice is Swatch, but for a budding WIS, that's not much of a choice. Love to hear any alternatives?

PS. Warning, gratuitous Sub in pic

Thanks Paul. Yes, that's a great watch, and I have one already. You're right, the thin bezel helps it wear small, but still just a little too big at 46mm for a skinny 8 year old wrist.

If he likes a diver you could take a look at the SKX013, which is basically a small 007, (38mm).

I got mine for €170,- it is my cheapest watch and it gets most wrist time because it's just awesome.

46mm on an 8yo

I purchased a g-shock mini off eBay for my 7 year old. Fits him perfect. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

Edit. Here is a link to the one I got him: http://m.ebay.com/itm/NEW-CASIO-G-sh....c100408.m2460

Edit 2: just found this:http://www.flikflak.com/en/

Interestingly, the black dial on Amazon says "Not Water Resistant", while the Blue and Green dials say "Water resistant to 30 m (99ft)". Blue dial is priced at $61.76 while black dial is priced at $50.63.

$11 for water resistance -- another bargain?!

I have two divers with that 7S26 movement, very reliable and accurate out of the box.
Also quite an easy movement to service, I love working on these Seiko movements.

Nice watch but for a little more you can have a Black Monster. Mine keeps time with great accuracy.

Truth is I've been looking hard at

- flieger watches
- watches I can wear on vacation without having to keep in a safe at the resort

And then boom, I see the Seiko 5 dial, imagine it on a leather strap (nicely done AzHadEnuf), and the price, and problem solved.

Amazing value for the investment, tough as nails, and fun to mod. Plus, I've been able to regulate all mine to very close to chronometer specs.

Don't trust Amazon specs- get the correct info tom Seiko directly. I've seen a lot of odd things happen when they cut and paste the specs...

What do you think of this then guys.

Watchmaker takes the parts from the Seiko divers watch and uses them to create a divers dress watch.......so perfect for work. All new parts and costs £97GBP. I'm going to order one!!

Here's my SNKL07. I've had it about three months and it has settled in to keeping time to within about a minute a week. I really should test it by position to see if I can regulate it to get closer. A large part of my getting it was to see how I liked living with a blue faced watch before committing to getting the 34mm blue OP (Air King) in my avatar. The steel bracelet it comes with is pretty much a throwaway, so I got the Brady Strap in the pic. Matches the watch particularly well, IMO. I wear it to the gym and shooting. Can't beat it with a stick as a $57 beater.

Best value for the money in all of entry level watchmaking. I've probably owned 30 Seiko's and I'm not done!

What's more is when I flip them, I never loose a penny!!

Aye, you've got to be careful with those loose pennies, that you don't lose any of them.
