I promised a while back i will tell you how much duty i will pay for SubC i purchased in Japan. Well, i got back to the states last week, entered US through Washington DC Dulles, declared the SubC purchase with the purchase price of $6500. Had to go to the customs and a customs guy pulled his calculator out and came up with the $160 duty. Paid it with my credit card.
So my purchase price overall for subC is $6660. Interesting number i must say...

Thank you for the update and fantastic news! If it were me, I'd have paid as quickly as possible and hoofed it out, and not lingered to ask for the how and why of that figure. But, did you?

Also, did you have to declare it on your way into and out of China and Korea to avoid paying duty in those countries?

I left it in the Korea during my trips and since Korea has a strict policy, I went to the customs and stated that I was in transit. Showed my passport and tickets and they let me go no problem

Korea was great, mostly in Seoul. Lots of food and drinking.
Ver modern and clean city..
But traffice is real bad..

$160 isn't enough to even think about not declaring it. Had a friend who bought in Europe and wore it home without declaring it. He got away with it but he was a nervous wreck.

That is certainly reasonable. Is there a published reference to support this in case someone makes a similar declaration and somehow ends up getting charged a much higher rate? Less than 2.5% almost seems too good to be true.

Yes. It is on the government's website. But, similar to every other government regulation it is impossible to interpret. It depends on the metal content, value etc.

I was thinking of buying a Patek overseas, but I couldn't figure out what the duties would be. I even called three different customs officers and got three vastly different answers. I really think it boils down to how cool the officer is and what their interpretation is.

Duties on a single watch is silly to customs officers. They are after bigger fish. So, I think they just arrive at a reasonable number (using the ambiguous guidelines) and charge you that.

Good on you for paying your customs duty. I think it's downright bad form not to and it bugs me no end when folks here brag about dodging their tax and duties. Doing it is one thing, but bragging about it is another.

$160 is piece of mind that you paid your tax and they're not gonna come back on you.

WAAAAY bck when I bought my Tag Heuer (1987/88 time frame) in Austria, I paid the VAT at purchase. When I got home, they mailed me a check.

I don't remember the amount of either the watch or the check but I still have the watch...

Lucky you. I just checked with canadian customs calculator, and the same watch would cost a canadian $1720 CAD in taxes at the customs... that's $1315 USD at today's rate. Ouch.

Yup that's why I never purchase abroad and look to my local ADs. Just not worth risking it and never being able to travel outside Canada with an undeclared watch. Chances are slim you would ever get asked where you bought the watch though but still, peace of mind is everything.

Customs might have let you off lightly for being honest and up front. They're not generally interested in stand-up guys who do things by the book, they're more interested in those carrying illegal stuff.

I would gladly pay duties which are reasonable.
Thing is if you want to import a Rolex into my country, mind you income tax 50% already, I would need to pay roughly 30% (21 VAT and 9 import duties)
That is nothing short of legal robbery by the government imho.
