Safe to travel with my watch?

I'm about to embark on a Mediterranean cruise with my wife and some friends and was of course planning wearing my 30 year old 16750. We start in Barcelona and have stops and excursions in Toulon, Florence, Rome, Mykonos, Istanbul, Athens, and wind up in Venice. My friend who is a more experienced international traveler then me is leaving his Sub at home to avoid getting it lifted or drawing any unwanted attention. Is that really necessary? What are your thoughts? Thanks!

Don't wear it anywhere. Send it to me for safekeeping.

You can trust me, but I wouldn't trust Ron as far as I could throw him. You can safely send it to me. I will guard it well and keep any harm from coming to it.

Insure and wear it. If you'll be getting in the water have it pressure tested before you go. The GMT was made for international trips!

Do you or your friend wear your watch in the USA I would expect you would have as much chance as how you put get it lifted there as anywhere else in the big wide world.Millions upon millions of Rolex watches are worn daily in most all the countries you have mentioned. Now if you go around anywhere in this world with a sign on your forehead saying look here I am wearing a Rolex perhaps then you might be asking for trouble use common sense you will have no problem.

Maybe if you were heading to the Democratic Republic of Congo would I suggest leaving it home and taking a Timex (or g-shock)...

Otherwise, enjoy!

None of those cities are any different than NYC, LA, Boston, etc., with the exception that YOU may look more touristy there and stand out as a target a bit more.
But it's not like you are going to dangerous third world countries. Just stay alert and you will have no issues.

Wear and enjoy.

And even in dangerous third world countries it is not a problem... This is were i live.

Most of Rolexes around here are fakes, they are sold in the street. If you get robbed they'll go for your cash and mobile.

I pay more attention to my IPhone than to my watch.

Actually don't be alert, that is what draws attention.

Wear it and enjoy it, it is made to travel. You'll be able to shoot great wrist shots !

Insure it, wear it and enjoy it. Sounds like you may be others in small groups during your site seeing which will lessen the likelihood of being picked out for a hard mugging. Of course as we should do anyways, be aware of your surroundings.

Just be aware, some thieves in those areas may not go after your watch, but may go directly for your wallet. Pick-pocketing is a lot more common in dense areas where your eyes are on other things.

I disagree that NYC, LA or Boston are comparable to the cities you have listed. Apples and Oranges.

I hear instead of actually lifting the watch its much easier for thieves to cut off your hand and slide the watch right off, this is very common in the places you are visiting

Is it safe to leave it at home? Once you figure out where your watch will be safer, at home or with you on the trip, act accordingly...
