Seeking advice..

Greetings TRF members, I hope your all enjoying this Sunday. I see that most of you on here are wiser than my soon to be 20 year old mind. A lot of you have a lot more life experience and have dealt with a lot more things than I have. When times are tough and the going gets rough, what do you fine gentleman do to stay positive and push through? How do you keep your goals set in focus and how do you wake up and psych yourself up and proceed with an enthusiastic and positive day? A few things I do is set my wallpaper on my cellphone screen to a certain goal I want to achieve. For a while, it was the Rolex symbol and recently I've acquired a DJII that I've been lusting for since I was 16. At first it was a bluesy, but since then my taste has changed. I'm confused now, I've got a nice car, I've got a beautiful fiancé, and I've got my watch. I don't know where to proceed, I work in a run down used car dealership and was thinking of going into a Mercedes Benz dealership, a brand I am particularly passionate about, however the risk frightens me, leaving the stability of this job, and having to commute about 30 minutes to another. The work environment is unhealthy and I have a lot to lose if working at Mercedes doesn't work out. I don't have much positive friends in my social life, or any for that matter and I'm seeking advice from the only place I 'fit in'

At 20 years old you shouldn't be worried about the risk in changing jobs. I know what it is like to be in a stable position and not wanting to leave that place, but you won't get any further unless you move.

If you really won't leave the "run down used car dealership", maybe look into ways of improving it. Make a plan, set the goals and proceed. It will help you keep positive in rough times.

It's a bit intimidating since I do have bills to pay and if it doesn't work at Mercedes I do stand in losing a lot, but I see your point in if I don't risk and keep moving forward, I never will.

Good advice Mohamad, but I understand your reluctance to give up the income source. Could you "feel out" the other dealership without your current employer knowing? That would be my path if I were you.
Sometimes a big leap is indicated, you can't cross a chasm in several small jumps, that kind of thing.
Best of luck, nothing ventured nothing gained.

I appreciate you chiming in, Tim, you've always given me solid advice no matter how small or big the case may be. Feeling out the other dealership may be an option before I take a dive.

Never hurts to test the waters first if you are able to without jeopardizing what you have now.

The most I could do is probably go check out to see how the salesman and how they operate in general, I doubt I could take the job and test it out and quit if it isn't for me. What do you mean by testing the waters?

Before you had the watch, car, engagement ring, etc...you should have put 12 months pay in the bank or at least 6 months, then we wouldn't be having this conversation...

I tell all my young clients before they do anything (invest, by insurance, buy a house, etc..), have 6 months of total living expenses in the bank, it's the most liberating, and secure, feeling in the world...

I do have enough in the bank, however it's my savings and prefer not to dip into it.

Savings is different than 6 months of living expenses and actually savings should be invested where as the 6 months of security in the bank is liquid in cash.

Anyway, if you are as successful at your current position as you say, then I'm sure they'll take you back if the deal at the Mercedes dealership doesn't work out because at the end of the day any good owner is about selling cars...and it appears you are good at that.

Good luck

To the OP, sometimes you need to take risks to get ahead and at 20 I wouldn't be too concerned about making a switch to another job, or even career for that matter.

Calculated risk is just part of life and it's the road to financial freedom.

Thank you guys for chiming in. I'm constantly looking for ways to improve myself and I feel getting out of this dump and going into Mercedes would be a huge step in the right direction. I'm just worried of the risks. I doubt the owners here will hire back because there egos will not allow it.

If you have a nice car and a Rolex at 20, then you must be doing something right!

I agree with those above, build up a nest egg that will give you the opportunity to "take a chance". In my mid 40's and last year left my job of 31 years to go independent. Scares the crap out of me, but I have 2 years of living expenses in a money market account, and that is what lets me sleep at night.

I say give it a shot. I have been in the industry and it is quit common for sales people to hop dealerships. A friend of mine sells Mercedes and says it's the best place he has worked and he has sold all brands. At the end of the day all that really makes the difference is how the dealership treats sales people and your attitude at work. It's a rough job with very long hours.

I'd make the jump.

I've worked corporate jobs for 20 years. About every five years or so I realized the current position wasn't meeting my goals and sought the promotion and challenges I needed elsewhere. The experience I banked at the old place was valuable at the new place and I've risen in my field steadily over that time. Each move was a risk, but in the end, the risks made me far more successful than I could ever have been in the original job.

It surprises me that you can walk into a sales job at Mercedes having come from a used car lot. I'd have thought they'd hire experienced, successful salesmen away from Toyota or Honda or even Lexus. I say if you can actually land that job then take it, work hard and never look back.

Yes it is surprising. When my friend applied at the new Mercedes dealership they had hundreds of apps, so they only chose the people with proven track records at big dealerships.
