Have you ever witnessed history being made?

Thought this could be a cool thread idea.

Have you ever been in attendance at an event where history has been made?

I mean things like seeing a world record being broken (a proper one, not something like how many jellyfish can you count blindfolded in 30 seconds), a sports person/team winning a record breaking title, coronation of a king or queen/inauguration of a President etc

Given that alot of this forums members are spread around the world I bet there are some cool experiences out there.

Please share your stories and pics if you have them.

Walking down Lex in NYC and passing Paul McCartney going the other way. We then passed a guy who said "It's not often you see a living legend walk by."

I was at the Ronald Reagan Funeral Procession, when the Secret Service told an FBI Agent, in front of his family and friends, that he could not bring his duty weapon onto the bus going to the Reagan Library. He had to fast track by foot up and down the hills of Moorpark College to put his duty weapon in his car and come back. I thought that was pretty historic.

If the day you're talking about was 4/29/77 I was there also & stopped Paul & his wife Linda & he was gracious enough to give me his autograph.

I happened to be in Dubai when Guinness World Record was there during construction of Burj Khalifa to certify it as world's tallest building even though it was not finished yet.

Haven't felt that way before or since.

It was a Tuesday morning and I was on the dial-up Internet connection playing chess on pogo.com, ready to start my last year of college, when I logged off at random for some unknown reason. Within a minute the phone rang, and my mother told me that a plane hit the WTC. I was picturing a small Cessna or something when I got a chill that I will never forget as she followed with "and then a few minutes later a second plane hit the other tower." I was glued to the TV amid reports of an explosion at the Pentagon, a bomb going off at the State Department, and a hijacked plane over Cleveland air space (later crashing in PA).

NOTHING compares to that Tuesday, 14 years ago today. NEVER Forget.

I had the distinct pleasure of being a member of the Maine Detachment (MARDET) aboard USS Enterprise CVAN-65 off the coast of RVN on December 2, 1965 when she became the first nuclear powered warship to ever serve in combat. The event is recorded in Naval History for all time. That day, Enterprise broke the record for combat sorties flown from a carrier deck in one day. The next day she broke her own record and so on.

Welcome home brother. I was a shave tail LT in March 65 bringing in the first detachment of the 716 MP Bn ( the most decorated MP Bn in the Army). As any vet will tell you any day in war is a day in history. Especially so for those who gave their lives.

I am sure we have all been involved with many of them................

A few for me, just happened to be in a very nice restaurant in Sydney sitting next to Chris Evert and Greg Norman the night they came out as a couple .... sadly it did not last....

ALso in the crowd the night Cathy Freeeman (our local girl won the 400M) at the Sydney Olympics, to this day the largest crowd ever in an olympic stadium at 113,000+, it had been reconfigured down to 110,000 but somehow a bunch of extra people got squeezed in, the camera flashes and the noise as she came from behind over a 50 second lap will live with me for every........

Being in Germany in the park in front of the Brandenburg gates watching Germany play a game during the world cup with 1,000,000 others was also massive........

Being stuck near trafalgar square with crazed English fans after losing to Germany in Euro 96 semi final in overtime, while fans were overturning cars...... Funnily I also flew into England from Hong Kong on the BA flight that the English team led by Gazza did 20K of damage to the business class section upstairs.......

I saw the Beatles at Shea Stadium on August 15, 1965.

I also saw them separately. George and Ringo at MSG Aug 71. John with Elton John in 74 and Paul closing Shea. History making would have been the 1965 Shea Concert.

I made the first ever donation to the Royal Geographical Society using the internet about 12 years ago. I received a letter from the president thanking me and saying it was a milestone in their 173(ish) year history.

I was at the Jim Abbott no hitter at Yankee Stadium, particularly notable as the no hitter thrown by the one armed pitcher.

I lived about a mile from the WTC on 9-11, though I wasn't at the site during the terrorist attacks. I was at work in midtown but walked home towards the site and lived downtown during the whole post event ordeal. Probably doesn't count.

I was at Madison Square Garden when Sid Vicious beat Shawn Michaels for the WWF Championship.

I participated in this operation: Operation Bold Mariner.

I'm not sure if it meets the criterion, though.

Does it count if you're 4 months old and your mother is holding you when Armstrong is having his famous stroll on the Moon?
