guilt dials

what is the easiest way to tell if a dial is a gilt dial?

From looking at pictures of several vintage models, I believe gilt dials would have a gold writing font in them instead of white.

Heres an EXTREMELY RARE GMT Master ref. 6542 with gilt dial. Note how it is missing the cyclops crystal as this was an option for a very short time. Also note the red date font. This watch is a once in a lifetime find nowadays.

Gilt refers to the golden color or hue of the script used on many early references.



Compare next to a white,

Jerome, that's a re-fin. Notice the difference in the minute track and indices on this one. NOT MY PHOTO

Oh yes, nice catch Mike! It may be re-finished but it still looks like the original gilt dial on there and not a service replacement one right? I know for a fact the hands have been clearly replaced.

My apologies, I borrowed that photo from another website.

Yep. Service replacements for the 6542 are white with "SWISS T<25" to the best of my knowledge. Even so service replacements aren't very common.
