Dare I say it?...I don't like Daytonas
I just don't. I know that sounds like Rolex Forum blasphemy.
Since the day I started admiring the Rolex line I have been amazed at the following and esteem that the Daytona seems to inspire. There are folks in these forums that would pawn their own grandmother to get their hands on an SS Daytona but I have never understood why. I've looked at pictures, held a couple of TTs, even tried one on and I have to confess, I JUST DO NOT GET IT. Do any other Rolex fans exist that don't like the Daytona or am I on the island by myself? The upside however is that there is one less person out there competing for them. Whew. It felt good to get that off my chest. Ok,...........flame away! |

Different strokes for different folks. I enjoy my SS but it's not my favorite.

For $7,900 I could have grown to love one...For $9,200, I cannot. They are beautiful but they don't make me swoon. Just my 2 cents.

to each, his own
originally, the only rolex i liked was the white-dialed daytona. i never saw myself wearing a watch which had a black dial. however, after spending some time on this forum, i'm afraid i am going to have to have the daytona, LV, and IIC. |

As background, I find the long sweeping hand of a Rolex to be one of my favorite features. The absence of that is a big detraction for me.

The Daytona is a great watch for sure but nothing on my list for anytime soon at all. Strongly prefer things like the GMT Master IIc, Submariner etc. it would be 3rd on my list in that case.
For the person that absolutely needs one and it makes them smile then it is well worth the marked up price (to them probably). GMT has a feature that for me would be of more use. Chronograph is a VERY good tool to have but from my past owning Chronograph watchs it was never used.... The tachymeter feature is to me a cool thing but more a novelty. To calculate average speed or what not. Could never see myself in a car going "Hmmm... wonder how fast i'm going, AH I know let me use the tachymeter on my watch" but that is just me. The Daytona is an EXCELLENT all around watch. Looks perfect for dressing up or in jeans and a t-shirt. My passion is for the more prescious metals such as the 18K Yellow Gold model. As stated above it is 3rd on my list but can never see myself paying the asking price for a SS model. |

I personally find that I have reached a point in my life were if I am not going to use something, I don't buy it. The chrono function is just not something I want to spend my hard earned money on, the SS white Daytona is a good looking watch, but I cannot justify spending that much money on a watch just for the heck if it. I think marriage and 3 kids has really changed my outlook on what is important to me, I can still wear a nice sub on my wrist and not take away from money that I could spend on my family.

I have to admit that I'm with you Brian. I just don't get that feeling like I do when I look at my Sub or a TOG or a GMTetc.. I'm not a chrono fan I guess, but I'll probably never purchase any model Daytona

Not my taste at all, like many other rolex watches actually. If it isn't a GMT, Sea Dweller or Submariner I'm not interested. I can fully appreciate the art of what they are but I'd never pay money for one.

I love the Daytona. Best looking chrono out there and not a bad movement to boot too :)

The missing the date function makes me feel love and hate on it. It may eventually push me to buy a classic Tudor chorno version.

It's all in the family
The Tudor Tiger watch operates exactly like the Daytona with regard to the Chrono functions. It is actually a similar movement to the Daytona's that were built prior to the "Rolex" movement which were incorporated in 2000 and later units.
I prefer this watch to my friends SS Daytona as an everyday watch with the real functionality of the date function. My version has a silver face with black Tachymeter dial just like the Daytona. I have become even more fond of this watch than my 3 Rolex units (Bark Finish President, GMT II 2 tone and DateJust 2 tone with Champagne dial with diamonds).....I have received more compliments on the Tiger than any of the Rolex models over the years. It is a great watch and I bought it about 24 months ago for $1,895.00 NIB with Sharkskin strap. I have to say that I do truly like it much better than my friends SS Daytona that he bought himself for Christmas last year for $6,995 (good deal?). BTW the service mechanisim for Tudor watches in the USA is Rolex.....simply send them into the LA, Dallas or New York repair facilities and they will maintain to the same high standards as Rolex. There are a lot of 'Against Daytona's' on this thread. So for balance I will jump to it's defence.
For me I think it is the most visually appealing watch of any of the Rolex's models. You can dress up or down with it. Ok, yes no date function, but with laptops and cells these days, less of any issue than 25 years ago. Sure when are you ever going to use the timers, but how many on this forum have ever tested out the helium escape valves on their DS's. Take a walk around the City of London in the summer and every third person has a SS (that includes the women). Where is the fun in owning that! White faced Daytona's are design classics. Yes they are virtually impossible to get hold of and that might be part of the appeal for many. But they are one of the few Rolex's that look better in all steel than any other material. |

Id take one IF the AD ever calls me.. but yeah, Im not important or worthy enough to have one according to many AD's here in Houston.
but eh, they are okay. I think I want one only because they are so rare. If they were readily available, I would never buy one. -Steven |
