My Olympic Thoughts

Okay, so indulge me. My name is John and I'm an Olympic junkie...

I was watching speed skating last night and I gotta say, the uniforms this Olympics are FUG-LEE! The Canadian uniform isn't so bad except they all seem to be about a size too big for the competitors and those red 'pectoral' patches look horrible, particularly on the women. Further in speed skating... anyone see that Russian uniform??? Looks like it would be more at home hanging in a window in Versaille than on a skater. And the Dutch... well the Dutch uniform is so ORANGE, that I had to put on my sunglasses. They should be fined for that much orange in a single uniform.

On an upside, I also watched the pairs figure skating and that Chinese couple, the Zhangs... man she took a wicked aweful fall (after her partner threw her high in the air, she bailed and landed HARD with her knee bent at a bizarre angle). I thought for sure they would pull out, but after shaking off the jitters, they got back in there and skated AMAZINGLY well and got a silver medal.

THAT, my friends is a life defining moment and a lesson to us all. I am SO impressed by their gritty toughness.

I agreee with you, John. I saw that fall the Chinese girl took. And then to see her get up, complete the program AND skate off with Silver was amazing. I was nearly in tears, it was so emotional.

I also agree with the fugliness of the speed skaters' costumes. Looked more like a circus than an atheletic event. The Canadian patches looked like dirty uniform spots. And that Dutch ORANGE was the absolute worst. What were they smoking when they designed those abominations? Well, actually, we know what they were smoking. Some of Frans' toke, no doubt.

The only thing worse than the Dutch speed skaters uniforms was when they panned the camera to the cloggers in the crowd, all wearing ORANGE. YUCK!

Let me explain, poor souls without any herritage. The colour orange is the house colour of our royal family and this dates back to the 16th century. Our national flag used to be orange, white and blue. (Oranje, Blanje, Bleu), now it is red, white and blue with an orange sash. Our heir to the throne is therefore the Prince of Orange. (Don't get any silly ideas, like reversing this ). All our supporters always wear orange (wigs, clogs, shirts, paint, you name it) and this can be seen at all international sporting events: one ocean of orange. Now let me hear something about your history... oh, what? There is none?

Just because you cloggies go back to William of Orange or whatever, doesnt mean that its a nice colour.

As for our history in Canada, we are the only nation on earth who asked politely for independace from our masters, and got it (likely cuz they were sick of the crap the French give them on language and culture). We are also the only nation on earth to soundly and unequivocably beat the USA in a war.

Now Fransie pansie... go back below sea level and get me some tulips. NOW!

I hope our Canadian skier who has "a sore knee" and dropped out of the competition was watching that so he knows that he just got b!tch slapped by a Chinese woman who apparently has more balls than he does.........bloody wimp!!

Couldnt agree more. Eric Guay (ahem, pronounced gay) should hang his head in shame for pulling out with a sore knee. BTW, he said he can walk fine, and do weight training but as he said when I ski it hurts. Freakin hell.... I would have to have my leg practically severed before I would back out of the Olympics.

That Chinese woman, all of 90lbs, body slammed Mr. Guay and his lame-ass, lazy excuses. My freakin tax dollars support him and his profession of ski racing and when the Olympics come around, I expect results. Race or move over for someone who is hungry, ya pu$$y.

That took alot of heart and raw desire I was actually clapping for her when they continued and finished their program

Back to the thread.
Some people are born with that drive to compete at there best, even during injury or catastrophe.
Take my daughter. We do not push her to excel. But she is a competative dancer & cheerleader. She has a tendon in her foot that has "popped out" ( similar to Curt Schilling in the World Series a few years ago) in her ankle.
We are patiently awaiting surgery ( no comment on the 12 month wait)
But dispite the pain ( she can barely walk), she will not let her team mates down. She has not missed a competition ( and have won many of them with extremely high scores).
Her teammates have litterally carried her of the floor after they perform.
She is my hero

Seriously though, that is very commendable of Michelle , you must be very proud of her but be careful. When I was younger, I competed through a shoulder injury. I can't say that I regret the accomplishments, but it hasn't been the same since

Well I remember I started a racing season with a terrible soft tissue injury that wouldnt go away. As I was basically the captain of the team, the other guys would usually work to help me. But I went out there and raced in agony, for the team. I actually was able to win one race when I was injured, and helped two team mates win races as well.

Like I said, I would have to be pretty much paralyzed before I would back out of a competition, particularly a big one.

I think kids today dont have a strong work ethic and expect things handed to them on a silver platter. Man, I sound like my dad 20 years ago...

John, if ever true words were spoken it was now. My daughter Kayleigh has never met any real challenge in life yet. I partly blame myself but I don’t want to be her youth like mine. I work a lot with students and trainees and some of them still are clueless about ‘real life’. Some are very passive and just await orders so to speak. They think that having completed a study automatically qualifies them for a cushy desk job, complete with company car, cell phone and laptop. No! Show you are able to do some less desirable chores first and show initiative. Damnit! (I sound like my father 40 years ago ).
