president bracelet stretch

So I'm aware that the bracelet stretch basically happens because dirt/grime gets inbetween the links and the pins and over time wears away at them, the pins can slowly bend, etc. My question is, Does the wear and tear pertain to both the links as well as the pins, or is it just the pins? If I were to buy a worn 18038 from the 80's with normal bracelet stretch, can I fix it by getting new pins or would that not really solve the problem because I'd have to get new links as well, so a full bracelet replacement?

can anyone shine some light onto what is specifically happening to what parts, and how to specifically go about repairing/replacing it?
