Icon6 For new members that want their first Rolex...

This could apply to anyone but...

If you are here because you are interested in buying your first Rolex and you're looking to justify the purchase because of the price or any other reason, go ahead and buy it. You will have zero regrets and zero remorse.

The reason I feel I must say this is because for the longest time I held off on buying a Rolex and instead bought a ton of "alternatives" trying to "calm the itch" In the long run I spent more money trying to substitute perfection and lost even more money offloading them.

If you want a Rolex, get a Rolex, period. I wish I had come across what I just wrote before.

While I concur, that I did not regret my first watch purchase,

Blanket advice concerning someone else's money is seldom a one size fits all solution.

You're 100% correct, however, my advice is mostly centered about the guilt of not buying what I truly wanted in the first place and wasting both time and money trying to convince myself otherwise.

Exactly. Nobody can tell someone how to spend their money. Who are we to say that buying a Rolex will make someone happy? It could have the complete opposite effect.

This part was also true for me. At one time I had like 4 - 5 Steinharts and thought that would cure the Rolex itch for me but it didn't. Ended up sold them all and some at a loss. Once I bought my first Rolex (16570 Polar) I never look back and been offloading other watches that I still have.

I find myself in the same position...a bunch of wannabee watches (some pretty nice) now supplanted by the Sub given me by the Mrs on our 40th. Not having been in the position to sell watches, would appreciate some advice on where to go to sell some of my Steinharts, etc. Appreciate any advice that can be offered.

Yes, purchasing a Rolex only increases the itch. Especially on this site.

I delayed buying my first Rolex for a while as I tried out other less stigmatised brands but in the end quality will out.

The latter part of that statement could only be true if you paid someone to take them. You didn't lose any money twice.

I offered interest free "financing" to a few friends. Having funds tied up on unwanted items is as much of a monetary loss as the original allocation of such.

Interest free is second best to buying outright. I'd like to buy a GMT or Sub, but I simply can't justify it in my head for the forseeable future. I'm living on a higher than average fixed income, but I've more pressing issues that I need to address first. Business must come first, pleasure second.

I've never financed a watch and I probably never will. My finances are where I need them to be and I would never tell anyone how to spend their money. I had to offer interest free financing to friends and co-workers in order to offload my watches, payment plans as little as $100 - $200 bucks a month until paid off just to get them out of sight and recoup some funds.

The point that I am trying to make is that no matter how hard one tries there is no way to substitute something one truly desires and when we get stuck with items we didn't want to begin with we have to get really creative when trying to mitigate the losses.

I am on my third Rolex and I don't plan on stopping. Had I skipped all the "substitutes" I could easily be on my fifth.

If you stay on the forum too long you'll notice your collection growing and your bank account shrinking!!

Welcome to the madness!

As with most things in life, better off getting or going after what you want most.
Substitutes almost never suffice.
Most learn this the hard way.

I agree you should get a Rolex if you have wanted one. I had wanted one for 20 plus years and in that time i wasted money on other "timepieces". I started with Movado, moved to Gucci's, then worked my way to Cartier's. After I built up a nice collection having a watch for every suit or outfit...my brother in-law went out on a whim and bought a bluesy...jealously consumed me. I sold off my collection and lost on every one of those "timepieces" and bought my first Rolex...the Sub. I am now on my 3rd Rolex.

Buying other brands like Omega and Panerai invites the strap itch
In the long run the Rolex will start to seem like a bargain

Wanted a sub really bad for many years. Bought 20 watches that look like a sub flipped said watches and bought sub hahaha. Yup buy what you want in the first place its cheaper and gives you the complete feeling at least until you start wanting to get a PM piece lol. There is nothing like wearing your first Rolex. They are expensive but if you are a watch guy most watches are around 1k each anyway adds up quick next thing you know you got a box full of watches that do not satisfy you. Take it from me learned the hard way lol.
