No love for two tone sports? Seems that way
Been on the hunt for a GMT in SS for about 2 months. I have been following prices on here, Ebay and such. My budget was around 4k and while I think I have a deal lined up on what I think is a decent one, I had been tempted several times to grab a TT just because they keep poping up for cheap. This really surprised me. I know they are much more expensive new and I would assume less common. I ended up letting some really nice ones go for less than I am paying for my plain jane SS because ultimately I just don't like the TT. Seems out of place to me on a tool watch and gold in general is completely not my personal style. So what gives? Is two tone just disliked in general or just in sports watches that it drives what was, and should logically be a more expensive piece, to be worth 15-20% less? Has this always been the case? Then again, maybe it was just a fluke/oddity in the market this fall. IDK

Seems like you've answered your own question about why some people don't like two tone and it's true that they don't hold their value as well as stainless models. That said, I have rarely, if ever, seen a TT selling for less than its stainless counterpart. If you can save another thousand dollars or so, I think your selection will vastly improve. $4k is a pretty low price expectation for a stainless GMT.

I think the two-tone GMT is about the least blingy tt available, but sure they're all a bit fancy for the tool watch aesthetic. But all over rural America guys are driving around in $60k luxury pickup trucks, so I guess its a thing.
btw, where are you finding GMTs for less than $4k? Pawn shops? Craigslist? |

There is just less demand as people usually want SS, I think they look terrific and are great value for money if bought right. The TT DJ is the quintessential Rolex and the Bluesy a true icon so Rolex have a rich history in TT and nobody does it better.

also for the same reason, two tone pieces will on average be older in the used market, (and any similarly aged steel pieces will be less common and so worth more) - the majority of used steel pieces will be newer and so worth the same as a two tone piece that is maybe 10-15 years older i also think that a lot of the younger generation (excluding watch enthusiasts) are more image orientated, and less secure in themselves, looking to impress others ... they may see a two tone watch as making them them look as if they could not afford a full gold piece

My first two Rolex watches were TT a sub and a Daytona. I think they look great. It is just a matter of personal preference. You express you dont care for TT so there ya go!

The TT Blue Sub new is very hard to find at the AD's in Florida right now. The sales people tell me there are in high demand. Go figure.

Here is a good example of what I am talking about. Looks like a decent daily wear watch and would imagine in SS it would be gone. |

I never cared for two-tone models, except for the Root Beer GMT Master/Master II.
That being said, they have grown on me and I hope to own some, someday!

I like them very much.
However, I feel like for a sports model it should be one or the other. And at the moment I prefer sports models to be just SS. I find TT better suited to the DJ's.

From my point of view a tool watch should resemble toughness which stainless steel provides. The D blue and the explorer 2 are probably the best references. Since they are only available in stainless with brushed center links. I'm sure many would argue but I think the TT is more iconic in the date just line than a sub or gmt. And of course when coming to precious metals, day-dates and sky dwellers take the crown.

Just look here on the forum in the for sale section and look at the prices being asked for 16613 two tone Bluesy Subs. Trusted sellers are hardly giving them away for cheap and they fetch a good dollar. I happen to own one. If nobody wanted two tones, they would be for sale super cheap, and they certainly aren't! There is plenty of a market for TT Rolex sports models.

So I guess it just depends on what it is you're looking for. As mentioned, supply and demand.

Owned many TT references and still love them. Great combination and still a favorite of mine. Wife wears her TT more than her solid.
