At the back of my mind I seem to get the impression that setting the time backwards (and in particularly the date) may ruin the movement. However, my Rolex/ Tudor manuals say I can adjust the time in EITHER direction. Any advice/ insight to clear up this myth would be much appreciated.

Most all modern movements are now quick set most brands so no problem now just like your manual says for Rolex and Tudor.

I have set my time and date backwards and felt a little woozy for a few minutes, but everything eventually settled back to normal.

As the others have said, it's totally fine. The ability to set the date anytime without restriction, as well as the ability to roll it back, is a major advantage of Rolex's movement design.

there is no problem with setting backwards, but i never do so only because I'm OCD.

the myth persists because other manufacturers movements cannot be set backwards, nor can you set their dates between 10pm and 2am - another myth that we hear about Rolex.

i need to check, but setting the date is not to be done when watch is between 11pm-1am on my Tudor Black Shield, so says the manual... if I recall correctly.

I always set date forward, but setting time backward will reduce gear lash if you are critically setting to an atomic clock for example.

Regardless of movement, I always set the date forward. Semi-quick dates go back to 9:00 or so and forward to 3:00 to flip the date. But if I'm not sure, I always wind it round and round.

modern Rolex is ok to go backwards, Other watches depending on brand and movement may not be as forgiving. To avoid the mistake from brain farts or muscle memory, I always roll forward.
